  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Say you meet someone online, it could be in any setting you choose but lets go with these two:

You meet someone who becomes your friend, you guys get along great but a few months down the road they tell you that they gave you a fake name when you guys first started talking. They were the same person they had always been, just with a different name. What would you do? How would you feel?

You meet someone who becomes your crush or someone you're interested in, you're definitely smitten with each other and everything about them seems perfect. But they tell you while they've been that same person you're so smitten with, they at first told you a fake name. What would you do in this situation? How would you feel?

Would it be different reactions for different scenarios? Feel different if it was just a friendship than a bf/gf type relationship?

Would it even been a different reaction if it boy or a girl?

Either scenario would leave me feeling hurt and lied to (because it IS lying), and would seriously threaten my trust in that person. I'd definitely feel more betrayed if it were a romantic relationship, though, cause for me, that type of relationship requires a deeper trust than a friendship. I don't know if I'd stick around or have to walk away; I cannot and will not tolerate deceit of any kind.

I would definitely not get into a romantic relationship with someone who did that, but I might have a casual friendship with that person. My reasoning is that the person has issues, IMO, if they feel like that kind of secrecy is necessary. And I might feel a little hurt that the person felt lying to me was necessary. I understand privacy and all, but lying about a first name seems very odd to me. Why then give a name at all? Why not just stick with usernames, if it was an online friendship?

I wouldn't care. After all they didn't know me from anyone. I wasn't "future boyfriend" i was "random guy online that he / she barely knows anything at all about".

I don't know, I am old school internet though ... I am from the days when you didn't have your real name, picture or town anywhere online at all, you could talk to someone for months and months and never know their real name.
