Our salvation is from our sins (Matthew 1:21), and sin is defined as lawlessness (1 John 3:4), so our salvation is from lawlessness. The law is holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12), faith is synonymous with with trust, and salvation has past, present, and future components. So having faith required for salvation means that we are to trust that Jesus paid our penalties on the cross for breaking God's law, we are to trust God to lead us into having a holy, righteous, and good conduct in obedience to His law, and we are to trust that we will be saved from God's wrath on the day of the Lord.

what is the faith that's required for salvation mean?
What it means is that we are not capable of saving ourselves because we are not capable of living sinless lives, but Christ on the cross paid the price for our sins, making it possible for us to be saved if we accept this sacrifice of his made on our behalf and completely believe in and trust in him. We, in other words, appropriate his righteousness by becoming his disciples.

Actually I say lets go a bit earlier here. To start off with, if you don't have faith that there is a God, and that He will do what He says He will do, then you won't seek Him to be saved. Granted even that initial faith is a grace given; but you still need that initial faith to start the journey.

Things are sometimes best understood in contrast. In the NT, faith is often pitted against works, so to understand what's required, one must understand that at least part of what faith means is: not works.

We rely on another's work to save us rather than our own.

Edited to explain that there are many, many elder brothers on CF.

Adam's sin was an act of mistrust-of unbelief-in God, of course. Relationship was lost with that act, and as a result, humanity was lost, going our own way, no longer subjugated to God. We no longer knew God, at least with anything more than a dim memory or shadowy glimmer of hope, at best. Jesus came to reconcile man with God, when the time was ripe, as mankind became ready after centuries of experiencing "lostness", or separation from God. Jesus definitively demonstrated that God exists, lest we sink into just paying Him lip-service at most, and shows us the true face of the Father, the face of goodness, trustworthiness, kindness, and mercy-the face of love. With this-and the grace to help us believe it, man comes to know God again. This knowledge of and relationship with God is called "faith", and it opens the door for authentic communion with God, apart from Whom we can do nothing (John15:5), but with Whom all things are possible (Matt 19:26). This is the basis of the New Covenant. This is what man was created for.

If someone tells you how to live rightly and you have faith in them, then you will act accordingly. So faith and works have a very close relationship, however it's not the righteous actions themselves that save us, but rather we are saved from sin by being in a proper relationship with God where we will do good works because we have faith that God knows how we should rightly live. Our salvation is from sin or from not doing good works, which necessarily involves being made to do good works. We are made new creations in Christ not by doing good works, but by grace through faith for the purpose of doing good works (Ephesians 2:8-10).
