Fairytopia Dolls?

My four year old wants the fairytopia dolls (I think they are Barbie ones) for Christmas. I know that with Harry Potter, and the witch shows, bratz dolls, I steer her clear from. I guess I'm wondering if these dolls fall into that catagory? They are fairys witch go side by side with magic. She does know that Jesus doesn't like magic. However it's difficult to avoid. She goes to a birthday pary and there's a magician there. It seems to be everywhere. However there are still some great toy choices out there for Christmas that Jesus would approve of, of some she will get. But she over and over again asks for these dolls. What do you?

I've seen an Angel barbie.

Once before my nephew had a game with Dragons. I kept calling them dinasors(sp?) because dradon's don't exist(didn't want that can of worms) and after a while he just called it what I did.

If you are uncmfortable than don't buy it. I'm sure it won't be the only time in her life she'll want something she can't have.

A fairytopia doll wouldn't bother me personally. But I don't tend to think of black magic when I think of fairies either. I think of them more as a fun thing to imagine about. Let's face it, if fairies were real and they were good and beautiful, that'd be pretty cool. Actually my daughter had 2 of the mermaid Barbies wheich she really liked. They are pretty and fun to imagine about. I reality the myth myth about mermaids is rather a disturbing one, but she doesn't know that, she only sees the fun in it.

I guess it just comes down to personal convictions. I'm the one who doesn't want her daughter to wear an "angel" shirt but a fairy doll wouldn't bother me. *shrug*

A fairy doll wouldn't bother me, but a Barbie does.

I hope my daughter won't be getting barbies as she gets older. We won't be buying then, but that doesn't stop someone else doing it.

There are so many rubbish toys for kids out there. My son who is 4 next month has been asking about this car thing that you drive your cars through, (like a road thing and it has a skull tunnel) that is really gross and he WON"T be getting it.

Just curious why not an "angel" shirt?

My daughter has been into barbies somewhat. Not so much "barbie" just dolls in general. While I don't care for the image that Barbie portrays, it's difficult sometimes to know what is okay and what's not. I was allowed to play with these things growing up. I turned out okay. =) These dolls are cute, I just don't want to send conflicting messages to her. Still deciding...hmm......

Dragons arn't real, dinosaurs are, since I can find the tecnical name of a dinosaur but not a dragon, IMO, I don't want my kid confusing the two. but I don't mind them knowing things are fake.

IMO Faries arn't real, if playing with something that isn't real bothers you, don't.

IMO a 'magician' does not practice 'magic', they practice an art of optical illusion, so long as you are willing to be honest there is no conflict with religion. (this is again IMO, but it might help anyone wondering to think about it as 'confusing the eye', not magic, nothing you or I couldn't do with enough time practice and maybe money, all following the rules that God set up)

I started a thread a few days ago in this forum on this topic. In a nutshell I don't think they are BAD BAD, but you do find then on the same rack as the shirts that say "foxy grrl" and "spoiled but cute" and "I'm not listening". I think they're obnoxious is all...

Most illusions are not optical illusions, slight of hand yep, outright lies yep, and not providing you with all the information.. yep, but I cant think of any close up magic / card / coin / silks / ropes that use optical illusions. Now stage magicians may use optical illusions with mirrors and such, but I can go into that now or I'd be kicked out of the FCM (Fellowship of Christian magicians) :D

All interesting pionts. Thank you. I don't have a problem with her playing with things that aren't real. I had a ton of barbie dolls and my brother had he man figures..... of which got married many times..lol =) My only reservation is that as a Christian parent I am allowing someting that God disapproves with in my home and telling my daughter that its okay. I mean it's such a fine line to draw where does it begin and where does it end? I think that's where I am the most confused.

K slight of hand, that was the other phrase I was missing. :) either way it isn;t trying ot break the laws of nature, just confuse the eye and all that.

K so in the bible does it say anything about not playing with dolls? or something? I mean I am NOT well read, so really that is an honest question.

I do feel that if it bothers you don't allow it, not gonna cause perminant harm, specially if you explain it. And even if your explination doesn't make sense, the fact that you disagree is enogh for her to respect it.

I once knew a lady who though a brain puzzler was bad, threw it in the trash, so far as I can tell she had no real reason she just felt wrong about it. I respected her decision, even though I disagreed with it. No big, not hurting anyone.

It's not that playing with dolls is bad. My intention was to explore the fine line of magic, sorcery or anything that could fall into this catagory, that Jesus does not approve of. I do agree that explaining it to your child is a must. However she's not entirely old enough to understand all of the details! She does know that Jesus doesn't like magic. However she see's a magician at a birthday party, which is imitating magic, wether it's real or not doesn't matter. These dolls aren't real, the tv shows like charmed, aren't real. It's what they are portraying that I'm struggling with.

Hello all, I have 6 kids - 3 birth children & 3 - I have full custody of...Any way the girls are 22 - 15 - 6 Boys are 20 - 15 - 11
I have so been up and down this road. Reda 1 Thessalonians 5:21-23 (from verse 14 on is really good) So many times I struggle with this same things dolls - music - playing cards. My 11 year old likes Yu-gi-oh cards, well as I was not to cool with it I thought I would let it go for a moment - guess what? he started stealing them from his friends and other family members. The point it cause him to do wrong - they ALL (cards) let this house. What does it represent? does harm does it do? My teens I tell them if that music is making you think things that you should not think than TRASH IT. But I always say each person has their OWN walk with the Lord and thier OWN conviction. I also know that we can not candy coat sin or any thing that can bring forth sin!!!!! Just pray and I know that the Lord will truely show you what to do. We all will have our own opinions but it is between you and Jesus. I am sure you will do what God wants you to do.

Thank you! I think these are all great posts with great advice. I bought the barbie dvd tonight, then I read it when I got home..... barbie and the magic pegasis..... It was almost ironic. The things that I didn't want her to play with and I just bought it for her! lol When I was a little girl I loved this thing because it was imaginary and beautiful. I think you're right. Explianing to her along with getting rid of it when it crosses over that line of something Jesus wouldnt like. I guess my mom is right, it takes a village to raise children!! Mine just happens to be an online village!! lol

Hey power to the online village!!! If some doll is questionable I talk to my 7 yr. old about it and if necessary explain why it's not a proper doll ex. Bratz
The focus is not why "I" don't approve as much as what the doll represents as far as values. And I try to capitalize on that aspect.

I think the Fairytopia dolls and playsets are beautiful! And fanciful! What more could a little girl want in the way of imaginative play? Yes, it's not real, but that's what toys are for. Fun, fanciful, imaginative.

And about Barbies. I grew up playing with Barbies and I can't see anything harmful I learned from them. I learned to make clothes for them, build houses for them and arrange and decorate them, and even build relationships for them. I had years of fun with them! I could make their families peaceful and steady, just like I wanted my future family to be. I could make them love their children and take care of their homes and families, and teach their children, and even be school teachers, or astronauts, or nurses. What could be bad about any of that?

Now, the Bratz dolls I don't care for. Too much make-up and "party" type clothing for little girls. But that's just my opinion.
