  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've fasted before to get closer to God, certainly. Back when I was Muslim, I would abstain from eating during the day for a whole month and that made me feel closer to God.

But now that I'm experimenting with Christianity, I'm going to be giving up one of my social media websites this year for Lent. I'm practically addicted to it and it might do me some good to stay off of it for a bit, if only to let me focus more on God and less on my phone's screen.

Good luck with your fast

I fast for Ramadan, one month of no food or drink each day from sunrise until sunset as part of my faith. [Just sharing my experience and not trying to promote Islam] and fasting surely does bring you closer to God.

You could add some Bible reading into it to if you wanted. For example, I find dawn and/or sunset and night to be very inspiring times for reading or writing.

I would quite like to actually fast from an arm, for example, putting it in a sling and not using it for a specified time as a movement to raise money for those needing prosthetics in 3rd world or poor countries. Maybe I'll try and start this at university

These kind of statements always interest me. What does experimenting with Christianity mean?

Anyway, to stay on topic..Yes, food. And for about six days. I don't do much fasting with food anymore because of the medicine I have to take.

That means I'm wading in the water, so to speak. I'm giving Christianity a try, but I'm not declaring myself a Christian just yet because I'm not sure that I'm really ready.

Absolutely. I've done a social media fast before and it's been great! You really don't feel the need or the urge, rather, to check up on it. It's been great to reset and refocus all that time with Him. :)
I’ve done this. And texting. For me the idea is to go without distractions. Fasting food wouldn’t work the same for me. Sometimes I forget to eat anyways.

That's the worst time of my life. It's like, "where did she go?" :p

I tried fasting from food and I got most of the way before getting really dizzy and lightheaded. I don't know if I did it wrong or whatever.

What's holding you back?
The fact that I've been indecisive about choosing a religion before and I have a tendency to bounce back and forth between what I think I want to follow. I'm trying to see if Christianity will stick and stay on my radar before making my final decision. After all, this is a big decision to make.

But I'm just curious as to what would constitute Christianity "sticking"? You see, God shines more light and gives more revelation the more we seek Him. And quite frankly, He's already done plenty according to the works of creation and the life of Jesus, culminating with his death, burial, and resurrection. The testimony of God is plain and simple. But look, I know this thread isn't here for people like me to proselytize. I just hope your stay here is filled with experiencing the love of God's people. Good luck!

Thank you! I'm hoping the same as well. :)

That happens to me if I forget to eat for too long. I also end up without any energy and often more negative emotions. So personally I don’t think it would be as good for me as to “fast” from something that instead takes up my attention/time.

I am going on a 99 day facebook fast. I wanted to know have you ever fasted from something by not doing it because you wanted to get closer to Jesus?

I hasn't used Facebook for over a year now.

Basically, I have decided to quit its use, not just fast. Although I have kept my account active so I can still use the messenger feature which I found pretty useful, like free text messages.

I definitely am more focused in spiritual things without FB. Vast majority of content even from my own friends is nothing but mindless distractions.

It also freed my time for more useful things.

Careful what you put in front of you. No one can say, they are immune from false teachings which abounds in FB. As one who has quit FB indefinitely, I can certainly say, many Christans are strongly affected by it negatively.

I did the same thing when I worked in a Muslim, Arab company for two years.

I never been a Muslim but I also did the fast as respect for my Muslim colleagues.

I could say, it has positive effect.

When I saw the title I thought you meant scrolling through facebook at a fast pace, or posting/posting/commenting too quickly.

I got into facebook because my son was, and I wanted to be able to watch what he was doing, and to also watch what my ex-husband and his family are doing that might affect my boys. The reason still stands, so I can't fast from it. I can reduce my personal use of it, and I have actually spent less time on it lately.

I fast for Lent. So yeah, every year.
