Extinction of males

This is clearly evidence for a young earth then. If life was really billions of years old, then males would be extinct by now :D

The idea has been developed by Oxford professor of human genetics Bryan Sykes. He describes the Y chromosome as a genetic wreck, a graveyard of rotting genes and one day it will become extinct.
I've always though of oxford graduates as a bit excitable. It may indeed be that the y chromosome disappears, but this doesn't mean that men will! after all there are animals that are x-0 males. in fact the whole x-y thing is quite different for different animals iirc.

Yeah, once you see the mark of the beast then you better believe the Bible.
Unless Revelations doesn't happen and history just keeps repeating itself over and over..

Why would history keep repeating if Revelations (or more accurately the conservative Christian interpretation of Revelations) doesn't happen?

I wouldn't worry too much about males going extinct.

If you look at it, we males have been killing themselves off for the longest time, and yet, we're still here.

Look at the animal and especially the insect kingdoms: How many males die immedately after, or even during reproduction?

Bees, ants, and mantises come to mind, and I recently read about the blanket octopus.

Male: about 1 inch long
Female: about 6 FEET long.

He dies during sex (big surprise), but at least the job gets done.

I've always suspected that natural selection split the species into male and female not only because sexual reproduction insures diversity, but that each species would have a whole group of expendable members.

Need someone to try to take down that saber-tooth tiger? Send in the males.
Need someone to taste that plant and see if it's poisonous? Call in the male.

As long as the females, and a few males survive, the species can still reproduce.

This trait has served us well, but since there aren't too many saber-tooth tigers or mysterious plants anymore, perhaps it's being selected out....

Hmmm...

Mammals have been around for almost 200 million years, the Ychromosome has been the mode is sex selection for a very long time. I hightly doubt that it is going "extinct" anytime soon.

All mammalian embryos begin as female, the Ychromosome simply is a trigger that initiates a cascade of deveopmental events that turns it into a male. All the genes for making an embryo male occur on other chromosomes. How complicated does a trigger need to be?

Where is this guy coming from?

The Y chromosome has been mapped, and it has been found to have a built
in self defense in the form of palindromes, large gene encoding regions that
can be decoded in either direction.

One of the palindromes is nearly 3 million letters long.

From Nature Science Update:

Y chromosome sequence completed
DNA readout reveals genetic palindromes safeguard male-defining chromosome.

http://www.nature.com/nsu/030616/030616-16.html

Science Now states:

The Y is not a graveyard of genes, nor a shriveled up remnant of the larger X chromosome. Its new-found capabilities, dynamically shuffling its genes to weed out defects, has given scientists a new appreciation for it. As one researcher put it, this has "brought a lot of honor to males."

An evolutionary accident creating an amazing gene backup and defense
mechanism, or design? I guess it depends on your assumptions.

LOL, to true. I've been lab partners with females for the past two semesters and everytime we need to play with high voltage or use the "Jesus Rod" to discharge a big honking capacitor it's always "send in the male!". Seen my life, and sparks, flash before my eyes one to many times.

Oh Jebus save meh!

This is pretty old news actually, it is only about 124,999 years left now.

Jesus will be back in less then 4000 years.
Or even 20 years................
:D 4,000 or even 20? Wow you go for precision and tight margins, huh?:D
I remeber here (Texas) on Y2K many people were sure he was coming back for them. NOW they have pushed it up to 2012. I cannot wait until New years day 2012..I wonder what new date will be "revealed".- LOL

One neighbor was even stocking up on food and water. She always claims she is a wonderful Christian. I asked her what she was going to need the food and water for since she would be in heaven. I told her I would be glad to take it off of her hands and if she wanted to leave me her house as well, that would be fine. She would not...I thought it was odd because she was positive, it was THE END! :p

My dad said he remebers people saying: 1950, then 1960 then 1970. He said one Nun told him that the world would be LONG gone by 1990..Jesus would reclaim his "flock" and the rest of us would be burning in a large pit. Never could figure out how a sould could burn or sense pain, since it has no flesh or nerves..

I think people like to believe this, because it is hard for them to believe the world can go on without them...but it does...
