Exposing Adventism - Rehabilitation of masterbators

It is only fitting that we take a moment to recognize that Seventh-day Adventists are proud of the modern health advice that their prophetess of health, Ellen White offered years before the advent of today's medical knowledge. Ellen White was a strong supporter of John Harvey Kellogg's "health" treatments, as we can see from her frequent preoccupation with the subject of "self abuse" in her first book on health reform, "An Appeal to Mothers".

From the Wikipedia page on John Harvey Kellogg:
He warned that many types of sexual activity, including many “excesses” that couples could be guilty of within marriage, were against nature, and therefore, extremely unhealthy. He drew on the warnings of William Acton and expressed support for the work of Anthony Comstock. He appears to have gone beyond his own advice, since though he and his wife were married for over forty years, they never had sexual intercourse and had separate bedrooms all their lives.
Rehabilitation of masterbators:
Kellogg worked on the rehabilitation of masturbators, often employing extreme measures, even mutilation, on both sexes. In his Plain Facts for Old and Young, he wrote
“A remedy for masturbation which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision, especially when there is any degree of phimosis. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment, as it may well be in some cases.”
and

“In females, the author has found the application of pure carbolic acid [phenol] to the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement.”

He also recommended, to prevent children from this "solitary vice", bandaging or tying their hands, covering their genitals with patented cages, sewing the foreskin shut, and electrical shock.

"Plain Facts for Old and Young", by J. H. Kellogg, 1892 helps us to better understand why Ellen White was so anti-sex.

Is it any wonder that Ellen White wrote such strange and disgusting statements as:
Let Self-denial and Temperance Be the Watchword. --Oh, that I could make all understand their obligation to God to preserve the mental and physical organism in the best condition to render perfect service to their Maker! Let the Christian wife refrain, both in word and act, from exciting the animal passions of her husband. Many have no strength at all to waste in this direction. From their youth up they have weakened the brain and sapped the constitution by the gratification of animal passions. Self-denial and temperance should be the watchword in their married life. Adventist Home, page 123

"The sexual passion is indulged during pregnancy, which causes the mother to transmit doubly of the direful ail to the offspring within her womb ... every [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] expends of the mother's vitality a portion that should go to nourish and develop her babe. Very much of the weakness and lassitude experienced during pregnancy is due to the exhaustion consequent upon the sexual embrace, and the forming child must suffer from its effects: for the mother cannot impart what she does not herself possess, health and strength." Solemn Appeal p. 23

"Females possess less vital force than the other sex, and are deprived very much of the bracing, invigorating air, by their in-doors life. The results of self-abuse in them is seen in various diseases, such as catarrh, dropsy, headache, loss of memory and sight, great weakness in the back and loins, affections of the spine, the head often decays inwardly. Cancerous humor, which would lay dormant in the system their life-time, is inflamed, and commences its eating, destructive work. The mind is often utterly ruined, and insanity takes place." An Appeal to Mothers, p. 27

"Very few feel it to be a religious duty to govern their passions. They have united themselves in marriage to the object of their choice, and therefore reason that marriage sanctifies the indulgence of the baser passions. Even men and women professing godliness give loose rein to their lustful passions, and have no thought that God holds them accountable for the expenditure of vital energy, which weakens their hold on life and enervates the entire system." Testimonies, Volume 4, p. 472

"It is not the taxation of study alone that was doing the work of injury to your children, but that their own wrong habits were sapping the brain, and robbing the entire body of vital energy. The nervous system was becoming shattered by being often excited and thus laying the foundation for premature and certain decay. Self -abuse is killing thousands and tens of thousands." Manuscript Releases, Vol 5, p. 396, Letter to Dr. and Sister Lay, Feb. 13, 1870

"The minds of some of these children are so weakened that they have but one half or one third of the brilliancy of intellect that they might have had, had they been virtuous and pure. They have thrown it away in self-abuse. Right here in this church, corruption is teeming on every hand." Testimonies for the Church, Vol 2, p. 361

"The state of our world was presented before me, and my attention was especially called to the youth of our time. Everywhere I looked, I saw imbecility, dwarfed forms, crippled limbs, misshapen heads, and deformity of every description. Sins and crimes, and the violation of nature's laws, were shown me as the causes of this accumulation of human woe and suffering. I saw such degradation and vile practices, such defiance of God, and I heard such words of blasphemy, that my soul sickened. From what was shown me, a large share of the youth now living are worthless. Corrupt habits are wasting their energies, and bringing upon them loathsome and complicated diseases. Unsuspecting parents will try the skill of one physician after another, who prescribe drugs, when they generally know the real cause of the failing health, but for fear of offending and losing their fees, they keep silent, when as faithful physicians they should expose the real cause. Their drugs only add a second great burden for abused nature to struggle against, which often breaks down in her efforts and the victim dies. And the friends look upon the death as a mysterious dispensation of providence, when the most mysterious part of the matter is, that nature bore up as long as she did against her violated laws. Health, reason, and life, were sacrificed to depraved lusts." An Appeal to Mothers
A large share of the youth now living are worthless? Everywhere Ellen White looked, she saw imbecility, dwarfed forms, crippled limbs, misshapen heads, and deformity of every description? Really? Was this really what God showed her? How scientific is this?

One has to truly wonder what sort of intimacy James and Ellen White experienced in their married life. Regarding sex in marriage, I find nothing comforting in what Ellen White had to say about God's greatest gift to man and wife. God wants us to have pleasure in each other. Ellen did her best to make it sound crude and ugly.

Seventh-day Adventists assure us that these scientific recommendations are a "gift (that) is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord's messenger" they make her "a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction."

No wonder she is known as Seventh-day Adventism's "Prophetess of Health"!

A few things things,
1. Ellen G. White is not Kellogg

2. Kellogg long left the SDA church because Ellen White did not agree with his doctrine.

Basically, your taking Kelloggs character, then using Kelloggs sins to judge Ellen G White. This is plain out wrong, dishonest, and disingenuous.

"Shortly before the turn of the century Dr. Kellogg came into conflict with church leaders over the control of all Seventh-day Adventist medical institutions. He finally did gain control of the Battle Creek Sanitarium. He also began teaching strange doctrines regarding the nature of God. In 1903 he published a book, The Living Temple, that contained the principles of pantheism. Ellen White wrote him many personal messages of warning, but he ignored them." -- Ellen white estate.

Is it any wonder that Ellen White wrote such strange and disgusting statements as:Let Self-denial and Temperance Be the Watchword. --Oh, that I could make all understand their obligation to God to preserve the mental and physical organism in the best condition to render perfect service to their Maker! Adventist Home, page 123
Disgusting statements? strong language. The first paragraph I review and your already making things seem as they are not. Atheist do similar things when they dispute claims made by the Bible. If you disagree with something, at least be honest and not use deception to make your point. If you continue to read with in the context of what she is talking about, it makes alot more sense. Strict to some, but not disgusting. And she continues to say:

Page 123, Adventist Home:

"It is not pure love which actuates a man to make his wife an instrument to minister to his lust. It is the animal passions which clamor for indulgence. How few men show their love in the manner specified by the apostle: "Even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might [not pollute it, but] sanctify and cleanse it; . . . that it should be holy and without blemish." This is the quality of love in the marriage relation which God recognizes as holy."

Finally, there is a key point that your missing. Ellen G White has exalted scripture, therefore it is an accepted practice amongst most Adventist to read Ellens Whites writings in the context of scripture, not the other way around. Ellen Whites writings is not the law or doctrine in the church. The wisdom she provided ,however, allowed us to realize fundamental truths that were previously forgotten (eg. the sabbath). And these truths are doctrine. It brought our attention back to the truths of the Bible, not to a man made idea. With that said, not everything she says is fundamental to our faith. For the most part, her gift is taking the Bible, and putting it in modern day terms that we all can understand. Her wisdom is amazing on this one point and provides a practical way to apply biblical teachings in these last days.

Take care.

You seem to be "out-of-the-loop" on most things Adventist -- especially Adventist history. James and Ellen White were very closely involved with J. H. Kellogg, in fact they funded his medical school training. You would do well to read Dr. Ron Number's "Prophetess of Health" so you better understand the arena that you propose to speak to. It sounds like you have never been to the Adventist heritage site at Battle Creek either and seen how close the Whites lived to the Kellogs. Historical records indicate that they frequently associated together.

What is your point? Are you trying to tell us that she did not believe in what she wrote in the book, "A Solemn Appeal"? Seeing how touching yourself was an obsession of hers as well as J. H. Kellogs, you have a lot of work to do to demonstrate that their actions were in no way connected -- especially since the Whites funded the young J. H. Kellogg's medical training. Her descriptions of people's head decaying inward, etc are considered absurd when viewed in the light of today's medical knowledge. It is as ludicrous as her statement about a young lady's lungs going up into her neck -- a physical impossibility!

She also was caught lying about the sources of her "health message". Do you want more information on that subject as well?

Where are your historical references?

You are also wrong on when J. H Kellogg left the SDA Church. He left around the same time frame as the purge of 700 members at Battle Creek that did not believe in Ellen White's visions. F. E. Belden, author of "Christ in Song" (and Ellen's own nephew) left Adventism at the same time after Ellen failed his "truth test". He took his hymnbook with him leaving the SDA denomination without a hymn book for two years, and went to work for the famous evangelist Billy Sunday. You need to look outside the White Estate to fill in some of the gaps in your Adventist history.

Did Ellen White actually write this? said:

Is the above actually confirmed as being generated by Ellen White or did Kellog say these things. I watched that movie about Kellog and guys who were trying to steal the secret of corn flakes.

You always accuse people who disagree with you of being "out of the loop." Everything you said about Kellogg and Ellen G Whites relationship is known information with in the Adventist community. What is your point?

What is funny is you use Kellogg's sin to judge Ellen g. White, and then make a point of saying that Kellogg left the church due to Ellen White failing a truth test. So either Kellogg is corrupted enough to influence Ellen G White or he is credible enough to leave after Ellen White fails the truth test. Based on your stories, it appears you want your cake and want to eat it too?

And you still did not address the fact that your first quote in s attempt to paint Ellen G. White in a bad light from the Adventist Home was again propaganda (for lack of a better word). I didn't even bother with the other quotes after just researching the first one. But lets continue shall we? First , I was not able to locate the text you were referring to from Solemn Appeal, page 23.? Would you be kind to tell me what chapter it is in? Your pg # is not matching up. Thanks.

I have seen that SA 23 quoted before, but not sure if I ever found it in Ellen's writings. It may have been in the portion of SA that was not written by Ellen White.

Ellen White's portion of the book A Solemn Appeal begins on page 49. It is my understanding that the earlier pages of that book were compiled from other writers by James White, which is why the White Estate doesn't include them in its database of her writings. Ellen White wasn't the author of that quote from page 23.

Ellen White wasn't the author of that quote from page 23.

One would certainly have to wonder why James would have published it as part of a book authored by Ellen White without her approval -- and then distributed extensively throughout the denomination through official channels ...

I wonder how likely that would be.

Come to think of it, this is almost identical to the situation where Uriah Smith wrote a book identifying Ellen's amalgamation of "man and beast".
But if there was one sin above another which called for the destruction of the race by the flood, it was the base crime of amalgamation of man and beast which defaced the image of God, and caused confusion everywhere. God purposed to destroy by a flood that powerful, long-lived race that had corrupted their ways before him. He would not suffer them to live out the days of their natural life, which would be hundreds of years. It was only a few generations back when Adam had access to that tree which was to prolong life. After his disobedience he was not suffered to eat of the tree of life and perpetuate a life of sin. In order for man to possess an endless life he must continue to eat of the fruit of the tree of life. Deprived of that tree, his life would gradually wear out. (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 3, p. 64)

Every species of animal which GOD had created were preserved in the ark. The confused species which GOD did not create, which were the result of amalgamation, were destroyed by the flood. Since the flood there has been amalgamation of man and beast, as may be seen in the almost endless varieties of species of animals, and in certain races of men. (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 3, p. 75)
Mrs. White said the results of amalgamation could be seen "in certain races of men." The question that has haunted the SDA Church for more than 140 years is, which races are the result of amalgamation of man and beast?

Ellen White's statement provoked instant controversy and stinging criticism of her in the 1860s, and forced church leaders to attempt to defend their prophet. In 1868, four years after the amalgamation statements first appeared in print, Adventist leader Uriah Smith published his defense of Ellen White. In that book he conjectured that the union of man with beast had created "such cases as the wild Bushmen of Africa, some tribes of the Hottentots, and perhaps the Digger Indians of our own country".

James and Ellen White reviewed Uriah Smith's book, which they then approved, and sold at campmeetings they attended. James White "carefully" reviewed Smith's book prior to its publication, and then recommended it in glowing terms to the readers of the church's official magazine, the Review and Herald:
"The Association has just published a pamphlet entitled, 'The Visions of Mrs. E.G. White, A Manifestation of Spiritual Gifts According to the Scriptures.' It is written by the editor of the Review. While carefully reading the manuscript, I felt grateful to God that our people could have this able defense of those views they so much love and prize, which others despise and oppose."
As noted, the prophet's husband carefully read Smith's book. It is inconceivable that the statements about the Bushmen of Africa passed by James White without notice. His endorsement of the book indicates his implicit approval of the explanation. In fact, because it supposedly established Mrs. White's claims, James and Ellen took 2,000 copies of Smith's book with them to peddle at camp meetings that year! By promoting and selling Smith's book the Whites placed their stamp of approval on his explanation of the amalgamation statement.

Without Smith's explanation, anyone reading Ellen White's statement might easily be confused as to exactly which race she was talking about. While Smith may have limited the amalgamation to the Bushmen, a few Adventists have gone further and applied the statements to the negro race.

Ironically Ellen White's statement had a significant impact on Joseph Felding Smith (descendent of Joseph Smith), and affected how the Mormon Church related to acceptance into the Mormon priesthood of blacks. (See "Exposing Adventism - Ellen White and Mormon Race Relations" at exposingadventism.com/content/facts/ellen-white_race-relations-mormonism.php)

I find it incomprehensible that in either of these two similar cases material was promoted with the White's endorsement without Ellen's authorization and approval.

How can one arrive at any other conclusion?

Gilbert

A Solemn Appeal was printed as a compilation that included several articles by Ellen White, as well as others. I don't think anyone claims that it was published without her approval. And I'm sure that the Whites agreed with what was included in the rest of the book, or they wouldn't have published it. I just think that it's important to be accurate about the fact that she didn't actually write what was on page 23.
