Years in the making, mine is a custom-created design done by myself in collaboration with noted French artist, um, what's-his-name. Well he's noted by a lot of people but I didn't note him. It symbolizes the eternal mystery of existence and man's unending quest for answers - for knowledge, wisdom, and meaning. Or it symbolizes that I'm lazy and don't care.

"Keep Calm and..." is a pretty common meme. In Lutheranism we are reminded to always remember our baptism, and the confession, baptizatus sum ("I am baptized"), is to be for us our confidence that we are Christ's and Christ is ours by the gift and promise of God which is ours in Him which we have received in the waters of Holy Baptism.

When I first joined CF I used a cloud in the form of a question mark to indicate my curiosity. After a while lurking and seeing what views are espoused by rather too many users here I decided flying pigs was a more apposite avatar.

I grew up in a city that's on the Atlantic coast of the US. I love the ocean. It's one of my best metaphors for the Divine, and it's one of the places where I most feel God's presence. The ocean is immense, bigger than I can really think about. It does what it will, independent of what we want; it takes land from the shore and then gives it back somewhere else. It's always in motion. It is unspeakably beautiful.

The picture is one I took, of the shoreline near my childhood house.

Plovers are little birds that run back and forth on the sand, chasing the waves in and out.

Years ago, I was on this board, talking to a very aggressive atheist who told me that I did not understand how "barbaric" Christianity is. I replied, "just call me the barbarian, then."

The other people on the board thought it was funny, and before long, that's what everyone (except the bumptious atheist) called me. I decided to keep it.
