  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering what people's experiences were with existentialism, and if they could shed some light on existentialist concepts, I must admit that I'm finding it very hard to grasp, I've spent the whole day studying it and i think I've *almost* got ahold of the basics. So any inout is appreciated.

Existentialism is tough to define, because so many different philosophers get labelled as existentialists, when there are in fact major areas of disagreement among them... Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Heidegger, Jaspers, Merleau-Ponty... all these guys are very different and lumping them under one label is really unfair to all of them.

As a starting point, I would suggest reading Sartre's lecture "Existentialism is a Humanism" (which is probably online somewhere). It's fairly easy to read for a beginner, and though some ideas are oversimplified, you still get a feel for thinking existentially. The fundamental idea you want to absorb is that existence precedes essence -- the world is not such that we are defined as a specific "thing" and merely fulfill the obligations that that "thing" is supposed to fulfill. Rather, we originally exist in the world and then decide for ourselves what kind of "thing" we want to be (i.e. our "essence") by acting in the world. There's a hell of a lot more to it, of course, but that's the starting point.
