  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

for me, the Old Testament equivalent of Tom Wright is John Goldingay. His lecture series on iTunes and the resources on his university web page are excellent. I'm slowly working my way through his "Israel's Gospel".

I was just wondering, if any of you knew good sources (outside of the Bible of course!) to exegetics. I know basics of koine greek and classical latin, so original languages are not out of question. Ones you can easily find online or in university libraries would be a bonus. :)

I would say: any good commentary that discusses the Greek text. Understanding the basics of Koine is enough to get what such a commentary says when it discusses Greek words and verb tenses.

I just bought NIDNTTE 40 minutes ago ... have a look! And if You want it it's on a sale until tomorrow Friday December 5. 2014, sale price $159. It's for language. The only fully up-to-date one built on current research including all scroll finds, for the NT with great language functionality.

There's a thread about OT introductions: What's the best Introduction to th Old Testament book?:
I'd hesitate to recommend any OT intro. I know less about current OT scholarship.

That does give a hint about which commentaries to choose from:

A similar work is the (Eerdmans) Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament (EDNT) from 1990, it's on a sale in OT right now for $34.99. (It's also included in some of the high-end base-packages Faithlife has.)

See also my previous post in this thread: I just bought NIDNTTE... ... which is about the current, advanced work:
[*]For biblical word studies, I use Kittel & Friedrich's 10 vols, Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (Eerdmans); Colin Brown, 3 vols, The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology.
