  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

@VirOptimus do you know what sources he is suggesting that I read? Or sources that he is suggesting that I am not reading?

No, Mark Kennedy is not a honest debater and will use the same arguments after being refuted a million times, his schtick is several years old and if you search the forums you will se him being refuted time and time again. He is also very rude.

Because other than just having bigger brains, we really aren't that unique.
But, that's like saying NASA's SLS is not that much different than a jet... one just has a bigger propulsion system. They have different purposes altogether.

What is so different about humans compared to other biological organisms especially mammals and other primates? I mean, we have the same cell types, same cardiovascular systems, same nervous systems, same organs, same number of limbs, same bilateral symmetry, same digestive systems, same reproductive organs, and so on.

Other than the fact we have bigger brains and thus greater intelligence, what is so unique about us?

They have different purposes altogether.

I don't think we can infer purpose from physiology in this case. Again, there really isn't anything that unique about humans and we engage in a lot of the same behaviors as other species.

I'll stick with my NASA SLS/Jet analogy, simply because it cuts down on verbiage. What if I said there isn't much difference in them... they both fly, they both have rockets, they both have electrical systems, they both have guidance systems. What do you think an aeronautical engineer would think about that statement?

I'd rather talk actual biology since we're talking about real biological organisms. There's no reason for an analogy here.

If you want to argue that humans are unique, then you need to explain what makes them unique. Discussions about space ships and jets is off topic.

Really? You don't think the science of biology is enough?

But I guess if you don't think this claim (that humans are unique) is supportable then that is that.

You know what I meant, don't twist it. I do think humans are unique, and I supported it with an understandable (for all) analogy that seems to have really stumped you.

I don't know what you mean.

You said this: "What makes it so difficult for you to see that man is too unique to have evolved the way you suggest."

I asked you support the idea that humans are 'unique' using biology and your response was: "Not enough science there I guess?"

Which to me suggests that you don't think this claim is scientifically supported. Now if that is not what you meant and you *do* think your claim is supportable with biology then just do so. Don't dance around the subject. Just support it.

I do think humans are unique, and I supported it with an understandable (for all) analogy that seems to have really stumped you.

I don't care about your analogy.

We're talking about biological organisms. If there is a way to demonstrate that humans are unique biologically (too unique to have evolved in this case), then you should be able to support that biologically.

So I ask again, other than our increased brain size, what is so unique about humans?

My "Not enough science there I guess?" was my response to your "Discussions about space ships and jets is off topic" comment. Oh no... am I going to have to start recapitulating every post now. That really gets tiresome. If you can't just look at a NASA SLS and a jet and see the difference, why would I expect you to see the difference in a chimp and a human? I just want to say I have the utmost regard for chimps too, they are just a different kind.

Arguing an analogy is pointless. Even if you successfully argued that NASA's rockets were unique compared to jets, so what? That tells us nothing about humans and other animals. That's why I'm not wasting time arguing over a pointless analogy. I want to focus on biology.

This was your claim: "What makes it so difficult for you to see that man is too unique to have evolved the way you suggest."

Apparently what makes it so difficult to see that man is unique is the same difficultly you are having in supporting this claim in the first place. Otherwise you'd be able to support it using biology.

Lol! A NASA sls rocket is not a jet airplane with a bigger engine. It has a fundamentally different structure and propulsion technology, and has designs that are unique to space travel. Humans, by contrast, use fundamentally the same structure and organs as other apes.

No, I think it just makes a good point. I believe I’ll stay with the “NASA SLS/jet” analogy; like the “brick wall,” it seems to ruffle you guy’s feathers for some reason (as the old saying goes, of course). So it must be hitting a nerve.

It's not hitting a nerve. It's just irrelevant and off topic. I'm trying to avoid an off topic discussion.

You made a claim about biology; you haven't been able to support it with biology. Whatever difficulty you are having explaining why you think humans are unique (biologically) is the same difficulty in the rest of us seeing them as unique. Humans just don't appear to be that unique.

Thanks, you helped me make my point here.

I've already stated that jets have many of the same "basic" components as a NASA SLS, yet they are very different.

So? What does that have to do with humans and other animals?

What makes humans so different?

(This is again the problem with analogies. Arguing for the analogy doesn't make your point with respect to humans. If anything, it borders on the false equivalence fallacy.)

You fellas think on it a little while, and try not to get upset, I'm gonna take a break. As Arnold says, "I'll be back."

Take some time and think about what you feel makes humans so unique. Then come back and feel free to explain it to the rest of us. :)
