Not necessarily a better answer, but there are almost an infinite number of answers to your question that would provide the correct result. He sold a million cows and bought a million and twelve cows. That works. Or since you did actually say he had ten cows, he sold ten and bought twelve. But you never mentioned anything about him buying anything. He could have sold three and bought five. Or sold five and bought seven.
Your question is preposterous, because it has no single answer. Especially since you didn't specify the possibility of buying cows.
