• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Evolutionists, please respond.

An education can come from a university or from elsewhere, but it does not come from a diploma mill.

Furthermore, there's no reason to link a hard working man like Sir Francis Bacon to a parasite like "Dr." Ross.

And where did [home schooled] Francis Bacon, the creator of empiricism and founder of the Baconian method (a.k.a., the scientific method), get his degree?

From a level of hard work and dedication that a parasite like "Dr." Ross and his ilk avoid like the plague.

He was educated at the University of Poitiers, but never had an academic degree. Are you comparing Bacon to Ross?

But of course he is -- How else can he elevate Ross' status? Certainly not on his own merits...

In case you don't know this ... Jesus didn't have a degree, either.

Because it doesn't matter where he got his degree, if it doesn't matter if a degree isn't needed; does it?

Information is information, whether the precipitator of that information has a degree or not.

Do computers have college degrees?

Ross seems like a smart guy and is certainly an expert in his field, astronomy. But, outside of astronomy, he falls victim to the "cart before the horse" syndrome; he already has the answer he wants to be true and desperately interprets any and all information to fit that answer.

Absolutely; arguments should be based on their own merits, not on the qualifications of their promoter. But the issue isn't that his degree automatically disproves any argument he makes (poisoning the well is a fallacy, after all); rather, the issue is that he's using it to bolster otherwise lackluster arguments.

"I have a degree, therefore I'm right" is a fallacy, whether it's Ross or Hawking who says it.

Then this:

... can take a hike.

No, Hovind's mail order degree illustrates his dishonesty.

He wants the credibility of having a degree but he was not willing to do the work necessary to own one. A person can argue that his point of view is correct even if he does not have a degree. He better be able to back up his claims with facts.

The reason why authority is often trusted is that when they are challenged they can back up their claims with facts. Hovind couldn't. His favorite debating tool was the strawman. No one could build up and tear down strawmen like hovind could. Of course you should know what Commandment that is a violation of.

Wasn't Jesus supposed to have been a carpenter? I expect anything he had to say about carpentry would have been on the money. That's the point though. If someone holds up a degree as proof of a certain level of competency in a particular field and then proceeds to talk rubbish about it, it casts doubts on their degree (hence the mail order gag). It's rather as if someone who claimed to be a professional carpenter didn't know one end of a chisel from the other. You'd start to have doubts about them too.

Aren't we talking about Dr. Hugh Ross, who has a legitimate degree in astronomy?

It seemed that chilehd made a reference to Hovind, the comment about a mail order degree, and that AVET was using his old "take a hike" statement he makes whenever he knows that he is wrong.

I saw the gross error that Ross made in the minute or so of video that AVET wanted us to watch and realized at that point anything he had to say would be simply GIGO.

Um ... we're not talking about Mr. Hovind, are we?

We're talking about Doctor Hugh Ross, aren't we?

But ... hey ... it doesn't matter, does it? they're both dishonest, aren't they?

After all, it's not what we say that counts -- it's what we are, isn't it? ;)
