  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am wondering why some christians believe that evolution is trying to get rid of christianity or believe in a god. But that isn't true, evolutionist doens't want to get rid of religiions or people believing in god. However we do want to find the real truth of the beging of the human race. Some people just can't, and won't accept a book that says it has all the answers. But some evolutionist believe in a god they just don't believe that we were just put there on earth the way the bible says.

Some people believe that science, and evolution is evil and is the devils work, because it's different that what the bible says. And that people that believe in evolution is evil, or just don't understand the bible. I havn't ever heard of a real scientist say anything bad about religion or people that believe in a religion. So why does some christians and people from other religions say so much bad stuff about something they don't know, and it's mostly people that don't understand what evolution is.

Is it cause evolution scares them, because they don't want to believe that humans came from a few chemicals, and a single cell. As some one who doens't believe that there is any gods or GOD, I have told people I don't believe in god, but I have never said that christians or people from other religions are crazy, or uneducated, or weird, or something for believe that there is a god.

So whats the big problem with evolution I can't find anything other than some people don't agree with it cause it doesn't work with there religious text. So why does people think its evil when it's only a way to say how the human race was made.

David.

I would guess that it's frightening because it acts as a primary proponent for pulling people away from God, which by the Christian worldview, is the work of the devil. I don't know. I am Christian but never really have had a problem with evolution. To me, everything comes second to the Cross. But, I lean toward creation because if I can trust God with the things I know to be absolutely true, then why can't I trust Him in other areas? That last part isn't on topic, and will probably be edited out...

Because the Bible says Creation. :)

Furthermore, explainig the world using purely natural means, even though that's impossible (sorry, had to throw it at you ;)), gets rid of the need for God, at least.

But mainly, since I believe the Bible firmly states Creation.... :)

I would agree with paul and say it firmly shows creation, but there are christian evolutionists and I don't say they aren't christians based on the fact they believe in evolution.

Evolution can't. Evolution says we came from monkeys.

See you are one of the people I was talking about saying bad stuff about evolution and not knowing what evolution means.

I suppose it depends on your take on the Bible.

If you believe the Bible is the literal truth (6-day creation and all that), then obviously anything that contradicts that will be met with skepticism. Like I've said before, having your world view challenged is not a fun thing.

That said, I urge anyone on the "science side" of the evolution/creation debate to at least try to understand why creationists feel the way they do. Grab a Bible and start reading (hey, it's what I did). And, it doesn't hurt to at least read up on some of the creationist literature, too.

Likewise, anyone who argues against evolution, at least try to understand what you are arguing against.

I have read some of the bible I still don't understand why some christians get really made over evolution.

Yup, all christians believe it is literal truth, but just not literal all the time depending on the context. As for genesis there is no indication in the text to show it is not literal.

And I disagree.

Right?

I'm not going to attempt to explain what seesaw was trying to say because I don't understand it myself. However, I will state my opinion:

I don't have any problem with Creationists, as long as they realize that the only thing to support their beliefs is the Bible, and not everyone believes the Bible. (From the replies in this topic, it seems most everyone understands this. :) ) That being said, I support teaching evolution in schools, because science class is for explaining what scientists have decided is probably right, not what most people believe. If schools don't like evolution, they should just scrap science altogether; science evolved from early Greek philosophy, which was an attempt to explain the workings of the universe without saying "Zeus did it" all the time, or, in short, a defense of materialism.

But now, instead of "Zeus makes it rain", which is an all too feasible explanation because Zeus does everything, the clouds make it rain, and the clouds consist of water vapor as a matter of fact. The playwright who ridiculed Socrates for saying such things (what was his name again?) would be deeply annoyed. Similarly, the Creationists are deeply annoyed at evolution. Hopefully, the problem will be resolved one way or the other in time. For now, let's follow the school curriculum-- science, a Zeusless explanation of how the world works.

Sorry, I'm ranting

The title of this thread is wrong....the debate is not christianity vs. evolution, it's mostly American evangelical christian young earth creationists versus any discipline of science that disagrees with the dogma of the aforesaid mostly American evangelical christian young earth creationists. There are plenty of christians that don't have a problem with biology, evolution, biochemistry, geophysics, physics, astronomy, cosmology, information theory, et al. The others congregate here ;)
