We don't know the workings of Adam & Eves's digestive system or even the nature of food in Heaven. A literal reading suggests that "food" is both physical and metaphorical at the same time.

One illustration of that would be what you experience in a dream state where things seem perfectly normal to you in your dream even as they change form form one "scene" to the next.
