It's like saying that we know guns fire, leave a casing and can kill the target - but not seeing the bullet hit the target at a crime scene containing a dead body with a conspicuous gunshot wound, a gun and a bullet casing nearby means you can't accuse someone of murder.
If you have never seen a gun before you wouldn't know where the bullet came from. We would have to guess what the bullet was or did. We wouldn't know if a gun made a noise or not. We have ways of knowing where the bullet comes from. That only works because we can study guns & observe guns because they are tangible & right in front of us.
When Dexter or somebody studies a crime scene they are able to reference to scenes they have actually seen. They might have a room with dummies where they can shoot the dummy in order to verify what actually happened. We have to be able to test things in that kind of way in order to really figure things out. Anything less than that is leaning towards speculation.
