European states give MORE aid as a proportion of GDP than the US, far more. Of the 10 largest providers of foreign aid relative to GDP, all of them are European. 17 of the top 20 are European.
The US doesn't even crack the top 20 relative to GDP.
Europeans also outweigh the US in aid per capita and development aid financing on a pure cash basis. With a 10% larger economy than the US, the EU manages to provide nearly 300% more in aid funding.
Furthermore, European aid is primarily humanitarian and economic. US 'development aid' is often military in nature - including training militaries and police forces and arming them. So, the 3.1 billion provided to Israel, the 1.2 billion for Egypt and the 400 million for Afghanistan for weapons purchases from US companies, counts as ''aid'.
But, even if you include security and military aid the EU outspends the US in aid across all types by just over 200%.
So, take your ra-ra fantasies about Europeans sitting back and leaving it up to the US to do everything and be done with them. The plain facts are that it is the US that is not pulling its weight, not the other way around.
