Members are asked to review the following rule of Christian Forums that is relatively new:
All of the rules can be read HERE.
We have had reports of members who are offering counseling services to other members through private messages or instant messages. This is now against CF rules. If someone offers you "counseling" in any form here, please send me or another staff of Recovery that you see on line a private message about this. We need to track who is doing this and help them learn to follow this rule.
Members are not allowed to advertise that they are a specialist offering professinal advice or in any way to discourage the use of real life professional care by qualified mental health or medical personnel. This includes the use of subtitles or information in their profile as well as in posts. Keep in mind that this rule applies to our pm system as well.
On a related note, we have had reports of one or two members alledgedly offering services to help members here "recall" memories of childhood abuse. This is also a type of "therapy" that is very very controversial and known for being unreliable.
There are some specialist with Ph.D's or Master's Degrees who have had extensive training and supervision in using techniques to help people with documented abuse in the past heal from them. However, it is considered very unwise to use these techniques to recall "repressed memories".
There have been numerous cases in which the "recalled memory" was simply implanted by the therapist and never in fact occured. Further these techniques use a form of light hypnosis and there are many many expressions of Christianity that feel strongly that any form of hypnosis is unbiblical and that Christians need to refrain from this. (Many hypnotherapist who convert to Christianity have given testimonies to just how dangerous hypnosis can be.)
If you are receiving therapy that uses any kind of hypnosis, please make sure the therapist is a Christian and is fully licensed to work in the state or country you reside. (They may not call it "hypnosis" but if they want you to "empty your mind" and "relax" and visualize or listen to their voice, this is hypnosis.)
For those interested, here are some references on this topic that you may read:
This article talks about how false memories can be creatd by therapists.
This article gives examples of how "repressed memory" work is done and the dangers of it.
This article discusses the legal issues of "repressed memory".
This article gives a good discription of the dangers of hypnosis.
Staff would really like members to talk to their Ministers, Priests or Pastors first before using any kind of hypnosis or treatment to recall "repressed memories" and to carefully check the credentials of the person they will receive this treatment with.
2.2 No Professional Counsel Allowed
You will not direct, imply, or suggest that others should follow your advice by implying/stating you are an authority or professional psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, physician, etc. This includes, but is not limited to advising others to disregard doctors' orders regarding medical diagnosis and/or treatment.
