  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You have to expand on this :)

well according to Encyclopdeia britannica an evangelical Anglican is someone who Empathises the Protestant rather than the Catholic heritage of the Anglican Communion.

I would defend that Anglican church is a contintauion of the non-papal catholic religion in the british Isles, despite the very protestant leanings in the early years of the reformation in england.

Encyclopdeia britannica also says that evangelical Anglicans emphasizes biblical faith, personal conversion, piety (I too would would subscribe to this) but im not a bibical literalist either.

prehaps Evangelical Catholic Anglican is best suited to thological opinion.

It seems that to be called an evangelical Episcopal/Anglican church means something different in the UK and in the US and probably different again in Australia.

Also, I don't think that an evangelical Episcopal church in the US would be considered an evangelical church by the evangelicals in the US. After all, many evangelicals have trouble even accepting TEC and other "mainline" churches as being Christain, never mind evangelicals.

The Evangelical wing of the CofE is the Protestant wing, emphasising the authority of Scripture over tradition and reason.

It is also strong in mission and the need to transform communities and lives.

There are many big city churches, as have been mentioned here (add on St Mary's Bryanston Square, Jesmond Parish Church and P&G in the SEC).

However, big city churches are not typical. They are over-represented by young affluent people. There are strong evangelical churches in every deanery, often the biggest church in terms of attendance and parish share. These churches have the full age range and more diverse worship styles.

American fundamentalists have given evangelicals a bad name, but every wing of the church has this problem.

Absolutely. I know when I shared with an evangelical friend that I was now attending a church in TEC, she started wondering why I would attend such a "liberal" church. If I told her that there are some that could be considered evangelical I doubt that she'd believe me.

Yes, folks often look to the national church leadership and make judgements regarding every local church and every priest. Of course, TEC includes a great variety as does the Anglican Communion as a whole (we are a big tent). We make a big deal regarding homosexual clergy, and dealing with this issue is indeed very important to the church as a whole. However, this issue has very little effect on 90% of our churches.

BTW, our diocese is still in TEC although we are likely to get kicked out. Our bishop chooses to remain as long as we can. The Communion is very important to us.

In the end, the local church is the most important element of our Christain lives. As has been said, it is not the label on the door that is critical.

How do charismatic churches fit in? I understand that most churches have healing services. I know some of the city church are charismatic as well as evangelical? Is that just concentrated in UK big cities or are charismatic churches (or services) common elsewhere in the Communion.

The problem with the term "evangelical" is that it can mean many different things. To some it means someone who is conservative in their theology. To others it is someone who works for the poor, disadvantaged and the environment (sometimes referred to as the evangelical left).

Maybe this is not a problem but an advantage to the meaning. All these seem good things to me.And, I think you would agree too.

I think the charismatic churches would generally be seen as evangelical (except by evangelicals who don't like charismatics of course). When I was at university in Cambridge there were two CofE churches 200feet away from each other. Both were "evangelical" both had contemporary services but one was charismatic and one wasn't. Needless to say they typically didn't get on very well.

The charismatic edge in the UK (David Watson, Bishop Pytches (New Wine and Soul Survivor), Nicky Gumble) is a product of the visits of John Wimber and his team from the US - part of the Vineyard movement. In the UK he tried to work within the CofE instead of starting a new denomination. I don't know if anything similar happened anywhere else.
