I like Evanescence. They're not my favorites, but I definitely enjoy their sound and I think their music is interesting. My main problem is that the harmonies they use repeat a lot in different songs, so the songs themselves sort of bleed together in my head. Anyway, I bought the CD and it was worth the $$. :)

Lacuna coil are a goth(ish) band.

evanesence pretend to be a goth band, but in reality they are a pop band.

Lacuna coil.

I am so tired of hearing this fallacy repeated, I rue the day Kerrang first printed it. Even Lacuna Coil think its claptrap, and went on record as saying so in Issue 1 of TWF Magazine. They did thank Evenesance, pointing out that since Heavy metal Magazines like Kerrang started making such comparisons Lacuna Coils sales had increased, but they also said they found the comparisons laughable. I tend to agree with them on that.

I dont read trash like Kerrang, I dont have sky and dont watch it either. I am Kerrang free, I based my assertations on my experiance of both bands.

I am very pleased to hear you have come to the assertion on your own, I am used to people who parrot it back because of the Kerrang articles.

However, I disagree with your assertion, I don't think the similarities are as great as people claim. LC obviously don't either, but of course the Sisters don't consider themselves a Goth band - so bands are not always their own best judge. I still feel the comparisons are very flawed, to begin with both bands have a much broader repertoire than they are usually credited with and they only really converge in about the middle of their range. I find most comparisons between the two fairly forced and remain entirely unconvinced.

As to Evanescence being pop, I find that difficult to agree with as well, having charted does not make them pop, although their latest work is more commercial than their earlier work, and is a bit more polished. The same can be said for the Cure, now if there was ever an “almost but not quite Goth” band that deserved to be called pop, I would say it was either the Cure or early Cult (immediately after they dropped the prefix “Death” and deliberately went for a more commercial sound). This of course is not necessarily a bad thing, and whilst I do dislike the Cure it is for entirely different reasons.

You are calling Z a “typical evanescence fan” for not having heard of Lacuna Coil but I can’t help feeling that by claming Evanescence are trying to be Lacuna Coil, you are sounding like a typical LC fan. Again nothing wrong with that per-se but it does come over as snobbery when done as a couple of dismissive one liners.

I love evanescence - my flatmate bought the cd, and bought me tickets to go see them - best money he ever spent on me I reckon :D

My favourite songs are Tourniquet and My Immortal (I can play this on piano now :))... both mean a lot to me.

How do you feel about their way in reaching out to God? I think anyone who has ever listened to Tourniquet can feel how much they are searching for God... the lyrics in that song remind me so much of how I've felt in my search to better know the Lord...
