I just got into listening to Evanescence a lot! I'm just wondering if they are completely a Christian band or not. I love their song, "Tourniquet," which has great Christian lyrics. This is a big deal for me, since Evanescence is the first secular band that I've ever enjoyed.

they are not Christian at all.;

here are some quotes from an article proving it:

"
Then after two months, the bombshell hit. In an April 15, 2003 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Evanescence emphatically declared they aren't a Christian band. According to Amy Lee, "There are people hell-bent on the idea that we're a Christian band in disguise, and that we have some secret message … We have no spiritual affiliation with this music. It's simply about life experience." Unfortunately, Ben and Amy used profanity to communicate their request to be removed from Christian bookstores and radio stations. The industry quickly complied."

"""I'm not ashamed of my spiritual beliefs, but I in no way incorporate them into this band."" Ben said that, i think it is kinda an oxymoron.

"With all that the band has said in recent interviews, one wonders if "Everybody's Fool" is an indictment of the church and the Christian faith: "Perfect by nature, icons of self-indulgence/Just what we all need/More lies about a world that never was and never will be … You're not real and you can't save me."" Sounds a bit like shes bashing Jesus.

"However, because of recent interviews, unsuspecting Christians easily offended by profanity should perhaps steer clear of Evanescence's concerts since there's no telling what they will or won't say" profanity=swearing= not a a good thing to do= sin= they sin on purpose= not a christian band

Hope i helped you!

You are kidding... right?

The song ends with the singer saying Jesus is their "suicide."

osm

Actually... No, it doesn't...

From what I can tell, the song is talking about someone being pained and wanting to commit suicide to stop the pain, but they are crying out for deliverance. They want Jesus to save them from their pain. They want to know that God still loves them and they aren't too far gone to be saved.

"Am I too lost to be saved?"
"Return to me salvation"
"Do you remember me?"
"I'm dying, praying, bleeding and screaming."
"My soul cries for deliverance"
"Will I be denied Christ?"

I think calling God a tourniquet is to show that He stops the pain, just as a tourniquet stops bleeding. I really don't think the "My suicide" at the end of the song is referring to Jesus. I think it's just stating what the song was about.

It helps to read the final line in context with the whole song instead of pulling out one key phrase and saying that's what the whole song is about.

I personally don't like Evanescence and do not listen to them, but I get tired of people saying that "Tourniquet" is an evil song and backing themselves up by saying "My suicide" was used to talk about Jesus.

Ben Moody is no longer part of the band. Amy Lee claims to be a Christian. There is also a former member of Living Sacrifice in the band - Rocky - his last name slips my mind right now.

Jump5Freak777,
By what you are saying, someone can't be a Xian (Christian) and in a secular band at the same time. This is not the case. I myself am a believer and in a secular band for reasons I'm not going to take the time to explain here.

As for swearing, it's all in how you look at it. It's part of modern day language now and the context of the words has for the most part changed from what they once were. Words themselves aren't bad, it's the context of a word that makes it bad. It's only that Xianity is very slow to start accepting things because they want things to fear and complain about in the world. Look how long it took for Xians to accept rock music... some places still don't. And they don't even have a good reason.

The way I see it is that people need to stop whining about other peoples mistakes and start worrying about their own. You don't know Amy and/or Ben. You don't know their hearts and thoughts. How can you go judging them?

Nuff said.

Hardly. Atomic Opera is a non-Christian band with Christian members (see their band apologetic on their website). Evanescence is a secular band with secular members, with an entirely secular, and therefore worldly and negative and harmful message. Remember Creed? Yeah, there's another "Christian" band.

Tourniquet was not written by Evanescence. It was by Soul Embraced.

Hmm...

I agree that in the context of the song, the "my suicide" line hardly fits. I totally agree with that.

My question though is this: what does "my suicide" refer to? If you can legitimately say it refers to anything/one besides Jesus, awesome. But I personally have not heard anyone attribute it to anyone/thing but Jesus.

TerraSin,

I see your point, but you must be careful about being in this band.
I am a musician as well and I know that the bonds of musician-hood are close and special. I was in high school marching band and a college jazz band, you get to know these people and you form a special bond with them. Even if I didn't like some of members of my band, we still shared a bond. Christians must be careful not to lose sight of our own beliefs. A wise man admitts when he will fall and what environments are bad for him. So just a word of warning. I'm not saying you should quit or anything. Just make sure that the bonds that are binding your group together aren't compromising your standards of living.

I dont find them positive at all, rather they (SHE) is quite depressing and sings about death, bleeding and dying alot but ok,everyone is moved to a different beat.I just don't see it.Suicide is rather touchy..in regards to her lyrics..about it,help me clarify the positive...other than singing...will she be denied? Wow,i dont know if I want to even have another cd of theirs, you can have mine on Ebay.

On their song "lies" (from the Orgin cd) they appear to be a Christian band, for parts of it are acutally taken from a Bible verse:

Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Come to me and I'll vow to you
I will never forsake you
.

I do like them however, Christian or not.

How do you judge whether a band is Christian or not? Must they have big cross-shaped guitars?? XD

...I personally think that it's a very fine line. Forget "Christian" or "secular" ... let's judge between "good" and "bad" music. And I say Evanescence is probably closer to the "bad" side.
