  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My problems with the movie:

1. The name. The Bible tells us that God, alone, is the Almighty and that He will not share His glory with anyone.

2. The movie calls God a liar. The Bible is clear that, following the flood, God promised not to send another flood. However, the "god" in this movie seems to have no problem breaking that promise.

3. False teaching about the Biblical flood. The Bible tells us that God sent the flood as a show of His wrath toward man's wickedness. The fictional "god" character explains that people just misunderstood, that he really sent the flood as a show of his "love" for mankind. This, of course, begs the question, how on Earth does wiping out tens of millions of people show love for them?

4. I have a problem with someone making a comedy about the day that tens of millions of people perished and went to Hell.

5. The characters in the movie blaspheme God's name a number of times.

i am minded of "Judging a book by it's cover".

i saw it, and i was expecting to be unimpressed. For those of you who believe that this actually depicts ANOTHER GLOBAL FLOOD, i won't spoil it however i will tell you that you are incorrect in this thinking.

In fact, this was perhaps the cleanest movie i have seen in quite some time. Christians won't see it because it has to do with God, and might differ from their views, Non believers won't see it...because...it has to do with God...and might differ from their views.

Is it perfect, and depict EXACTLY what would happen? No. Pirates of the Caribean had to with polytheism, yet i am sure very few Christians objected to seeing it.

Watch the movie, enjoy the movie, or dislike the movie. Personally, i believe God thinks it's a good funny movie.

Patiently,
Jacob

But if even the cover is blasphemous, then why would a Christian want to go any further than that?

Because it's not blasphemy and some Christians realize that the movie is fictional and is in no way meant to represent any kind of realistic portrayal of God or the events.

Whether it's fictional or not doesn't matter.

It's blasphemous on three counts:

1. It attempts to ascribe power and authority to "Evan" than belong only to God.

2. It mocks His word.

3. The characters in the movie blaspheme His name several times.

Saw it today in the local movie house. Just Gr8 fun. But…..just how did they get the animals to do what they did???

*coughcough*CGI*coughcough*

1. It attempts to ascribe power and authority to "Evan" than belong only to God.

In the fictional context of Bruce Almighty God gives him his powers.

In this movie, Evan is carrying out the role of Noah, not "playing God."

2. It mocks His word.

How?

3. The characters in the movie blaspheme His name several times.

Oh my god.

Now. Two things.

First, blasphemy is defined in the bible as calling something that is holy as being evil or vice versa.

Second, "oh god" is not blasphemy or taking God's name in vain. To take his name in vain, we'd have to know his name wouldn't we? God is not God's name.

I understand that. However, the Bible calls God alone "Almighty" and tell us that God refuses to share His glory with any man.

In the same way that I've already explained in a previous post.

Oh my god.

Yes, just like that.

First, blasphemy is defined in the bible as calling something that is holy as being evil or vice versa.

In addition to taking God's name in vain, yes.

Second, "oh god" is not blasphemy or taking God's name in vain. To take his name in vain, we'd have to know his name wouldn't we? God is not God's name.

And yet, the Bible refers to God as "God" quite often.

It's a title. *rolls eyes*

And yet, the Bible refers to God as "God" quite often.

Because God is a univerally understood term.

Tanakhs translate to Adonai or Elohim which means simply Lord or Master.

It's a blasphemous title.

Because God is a univerally understood term.

And because it is universally understood to be referring to God, it is His name.

Seriously, I don't know what to tell you. Your view of God and His word is something that you're going to hammer out for yourself but, as for me and my house, we're not going to dishonor God by supporting this movie.

It refers to any god and people use it to refer to any god.

Boy is term that explains what I am, but does not refer to me specifically.

It's the exact same thing.

Yet several times throughout the film, "Evan" was also seen acknowledging God's authority and His Holiness.

It wouldn't be much of a movie if the character being led to true salvation in God's path was perfect would it? i admit i have been known to take The Lord's name (or title, whatever you two finally argue it to death over) in vain in the past, but does that mean He loves me less?

In regards to the title, i will say that the only reason it was called "Evan Almighty" was to associate it with the first movie "Bruce Almighty" whose title only served (after watching the movie) to reinforce that NO human is capable of understanding God's power or patience or love or is capable of Doing what He does oh so well.

If you don't want to see the movie, that's fine. As i observed earlier, though, this means you also would refuse to see Pirates of the Caribean (any of them) The Davinci code, even the Passion of the Christ, since it depicts an actor as Christ, correct?

God created humans (not necessarily all of them) as artist and dreamers, capable of thinking beyond exact fact, and evisioning works of art that pertain to God without being in the Bible. The story of my personal life struggle is nowhere to be found in the Bible, does that mean i should not tell it?

I might be suprised, but I am not expecting much.

The premise could be funny, but Jim Carey made the first one. Can Evan pull off such performances?
He did some Carey like jibber in the first, so maybe he can carry the expectation of Bruce II.
