The big picture is that 'good' is the nature of God. 'Good' is who God is. So in order to live with a good God in a time frame of eternity, humans must be 'good' as well such that they are tolerable by the sin-incompatible God in such an eternity.
However, since Adam sinned humans are put in a realm where absolute good (God's 'good') cannot exists. Just as Jesus said, no one but God is good.
Humans cannot attain the level of good as God needs them to be in order to live forever with Him. Thus in a realm like planet earth, what can be expected is that humans can do good only to a sub-standard which is defined in a covenant, humans thus need Grace to be redeemed as specified in a covenant. Our morality is thus something that "we can attain" instead of "we are good". Similarly, righteousness is "a sub-standard attainable by humans in a realm such as planet earth which is deeply influenced by Satan (the god of our world)."
