  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If my memory serves (which it usually does, but I'm still fallible) the flu is caused by a virus and the common cold is from bacteria. Or maybe it's the other way around.

I just seem to remember that they're from different kinds of "bugs".
No, both the common cold and influenza are virii

True, but I've got a nice tie-in.

See, many people who oppose euthanasia try to cloud the issue by using the "example" of lesser illnesses or conditions. They build a strawman and then tear it down by saying, "well by your logic we should just kill anyone with a bad flu" (for example).

They fail to pay attention to the fact that nearly every proponent of euthanasia does NOT support ending someone's life without their prior consent.

No one (that I know of) seriously argues in favor of putting the poor, the mildly ill, or even the recently-diagnosed terminally ill "out of their misery" as a matter of course.

Rather, we advocate respecting the rights of the individual by allowing them to decide (within appropriate circumstances) when they've had all the slow dying they're willing to tolerate and are ready to move on.

They want to paint us as "kill 'em all" types. Well how about a little turn-about? They can be the "you must suffer to death" types.

Why not simply enforce torture for all dying people - since the suffering clearly isn't to be avoided?

(And for those about to hit reply and attack this last bit here's a tip: I'm being deliberately exaggerative.)

I just assumed that was the plural of virus becuase "viruses" just sounds wrong to me. But I just looked it up and "virii" is not the correct plural form, "viruses" is.

Not every new word has to be a real word.

I've told my wife on occassion that she's the "awesome-est" person I know. It may not be in the dictionary, but that's a word because my wife is the awesome-est. ;)

And I'll have words with anyone who says otherwise.

So, we have to suffer because then we will go to heaven? That is BS. Don't you agree that not all things in life are certain? We Christians could be wrong and there would be NO heaven or hell and than you have suffered for NOTHING....for absolute zero! I'll take my changes and risk hell rather than to suffer the earthly torment. Personally I do not think God throws you in Hell for not wanting endure excruciating pains and humiliating situations caused by some fricking horrifc disease........God is a God of love and HE is the ONLY one that can look in someone's heart. He will understand....He will.
What are you thinking? It looks to me like you have a fairly good life.Your posting on the computer.Likely as not you have a roof over your head, clothes to wear and friends. There are people that have it much worse that still want to live.Hang in.This is the only life one gets.Live it to the fullest.Get involved.Maybe you could help others like yourself.Time passes quickly. It'll be over before we know it.

While I'm in support of euthenasia, I think it has to be monitored and regulated very closely. I'd suggest a specialists opinion, a second opinion and probably a psyche consult, to be in aggreance with the individual.
Questions of vegetative state are a bit more iffy.
But overall, morally, I have no problems with the terminally and painfully ill ending their lives. I know I would.

Seems to me you have no idea....It's not about dying. it's about living with dignity....

Believe me, I live life to the fullest. I laugh everyday. I LOVE life.

Quality of life indeed. NOT QUANTITY.

It seems to me that you don't get it.All the things you describe are what life amounts to.Shure there is pain and misery, but if one takes their eye off of that, they will see beauty.

As a rule, words ending in "us" take the latinate plural suffix "ii", rather than the Anglicised "es".

e.g. octopii, platypii, tyranosaurii

Whether virus should be virii really depends on whether it comes from a latin route term. Since virus comes from the latin term for "poison", it is therefore reasonable to assume that virii is technically correct, although to be honest I have never heard, or thought of the term before today (I'm a nurse). I will, however, be making an effort to use the term from now on.

I suspect that viruses is as correct as "fishes", "octopuses" or "sheeps"

And she *does* see that. How's that realization conflicting with the notion of ending your life in an extreme situation that will result in your untimely and exceedingly painful and/or unworthy death anyway?

Why the obsession with forcing people to live as long as possible, no matter how they suffer, no matter what their condition is like, and no matter whether they wish to live on or not?

Please explain to me how I tell my patient with secondary lung metasteses and boney mets, and a fungating tumour of the jaw that has eaten into his ear canal, with a secondary infection, which needs the bloody green mucus syringed out through a hole in his neck every few hours... PLEASE tell me how I can get him to "take his eye off the pain"?

UGH! That made me cringe! And I'm not even a native speaker, mind you!

"Sheeps", oh my goodness! Why not "childs" and "oxes", while we're at it? Or "mans" and "womans"?

Further...

FACT: 1 in 100,000 children may die from alergic reaction to vaccines
FACT: Vaccines save MORE than 1 in 100,000

therefore, we are apparently prepared to sacrifice that one child who WILL die of the vaccine, for the MANY children who WON'T die, of, say, whooping cough

So, we are clearly already prepared to kill people for the greater medical good of the community, just not in SPECIFIC cases... which I can only equate with personal squeamishness

From wikipedia:

The word virus has no classically attested plural form in Latin. In antiquity the word had not yet acquired its current meaning. It denoted something like toxicity; venom; a poisonous, deleterious, or unpleasant agent or principle; or poison in the abstract or general sense[2]. Nouns denoting countable entities (such as book) pluralize; noncountable entities (such as air, mood, valor) pluralize only under special circumstances. The term virus in antiquity appears to have belonged to the latter category, hence the nonexistence of plural forms. [June 1999 issue of ASM News by the American Society for Microbiology]

It is unclear how a plural might have been formed had the word acquired a meaning requiring a plural form. Possibilities include vira, following the pattern for neuter nouns in -um or virus with a long , following the example of status. However, none of these are attested. The virii form would not have been a correct plural, since the -ii ending only occurs in the plural of words ending in -ius. For instance, take radius, plural radii: the root is radi-, with the singular ending -us and the plural -i. Thus the plural virii is that of the nonexistent word virius. The viri form is also incorrect in Latin. The ending -i is used only for masculine nouns, not neuter ones such as virus; moreover, viri (albeit with a short i in the first syllable) is the plural of vir, and means "men".

So, we should suffer, because there is always a silver lining? What if even that silver lining is gone. Have you any idea how strong a human body is. It can hold on much longer sometimes then the mind sometimes is set too.

People die....let people die on their own terms if they are terminally ill.

Why is it that people think of death as someting seperate? Where there is life there is death and visa versa......there is no death without life. Death is as much a part of life as eating and drinking. It's nothing we should fear...because that is the only thing that is certain in life......we are all going to die......ALL living things will die sooner or later. To give life to all new living things.

Well I learn something every day :)

since the -ii ending only occurs in the plural of words ending in -ius. For instance, take radius, plural radii

what about bronchus, vilus, platypus? their plurals are "ii", but the root isn't "ius", just "us"?
