Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What constitutes an ethical decision? Why is choosing Pepsi over Coke not an ethical decision, for instance, while choosing to cheat on one's taxes is? Where is the line drawn?

Why do you think that choosing Pepsi over Coke is not an ethical decision?

I don't. I'm asking the question for those that do think that to think further about their assumptions.

I really think that the term "ethical decision" is redundant.

An ethical decision, very generally, is any decision involving ethics. Regardless on what ethical system you use, pretty much every decision is going to be ethical. I would say that once you have your system, you could say that a decision is right, wrong, neutral, assuming you have perfect information, or assume that the information you have is perfect. A decision like pepsi or coke would in most ethical systems be neutral, since it is simply harmless a personal preference.

Well, choosing Coke over Pepsi used to be an ethical decision as Coke is sold in Israel and therefore Saudi Arabia wouldn't let it be sold there. And I preferred Pepsi but drank Coke anyway!

I believe that a line is drawn when choosing one thing over another or doing/not doing an act can be construed as right or wrong. Right is ethical; wrong is not.

The negative or positve effect(s) the decision has on said person(s).

Ethics are general social norms (which are agreed upon guidelines and expectations for behavior)

The real test of ethics for me is Quo Vadis? If it is only me then it is evil and if it some generalized other then it is good. (But I am an ex D and Der)

An ethical decision, as far as I can tell, is when you choose whether to do something that will harm another against his/her will.

Given that there are obvious problems with a society in which people harm one another whenever they feel like it, it stands to reason that we should study the question of when it is permissible to harm another, and how much we may harm that person. That study is called ethics.
