  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd probably become horribly bored regardless of the environment. The nature of the environment would determine how quickly it takes me to get bored.

Just like how people fall into the trap of thinking that if only they were rich, they'd be happy for the rest of their life, people fall into a trap by thinking that if they get to go to some materialistic party heaven, that it will somehow solve all problems and they'll have some meaningful eternal existence.

A biological machine makes all the difference.

You have DNA, lungs, kidney, heart, brain. Eyes. Your eyes are equipped with automatic aiming, automatic focusing, within less than a second function from complete darkness to bright sunlight, make about 100 000 seperate motions everyday, have automatic aperture adjustment, and makes repairs while you sleep. IMO, there has been intelligent design.

Of course that is my opinion and you are entitled to yours.
In my experience, debating evolution vs creationism is a waste of time. I have no interest in it.

This thread was first about eternity, and then we got into what happens at death, and now this is about the past. I'll discuss the first two concepts here, but not the third.

Do you believe that every biological lifeform that has ever existed has its thoughts, feelings, and memories existing somewhere?

Google what does the bible say about heaven or something along the lines of that. They have a more complete list of scripture than i can think of.

IMO, the body is just the vehicle your soul uses to navigate on the earth. When you die your soul gets carried up towards the heavens, yes like flying, because angels fly in heaven. If you are sentenced to Hell you sink beneath the earth to the lake of fire. Guess we'll all find out the details the minute after we die.

No, not animals.
Why not?

You said the fact that it's a biological machine makes all the difference, yet you also believe that basically all biological machines simply have their thoughts and feelings and memories cease to exist after death?

Can you quote that passage? I would like to read it on my own. I’ve read three different versions of the Judea/Christian bible and can’t seem to remember where to find that in scripture. I'm not saying it's not there maybe I just don't remember.
A lot of it is in Revelation.

Check out Revelation 21, a bit of a description is there.

There are some other elements describing heaven throughout the Bible, though there are few details and little time is spent on the concept.

The burden of proof is on you. You just can’t expect me to take a statement like that on face value.

When you die your soul gets carried up towards the heavens, yes like flying, because angels fly in heaven.

That sounds completely rational. You missed my main question. What sort of things would you do or think about?

i edited my post a bit late but i included the answer to your question
Now you're saying that it has to do with life being breathed in.

Before you were saying that the fact that it's a biological machine makes all the difference, when now it really doesn't seem to matter because according to you, any non-human biological machine simply dies and the thoughts cease to exist.

Can you define soul? What does the soul have in common with us?

Does it contain our personality? Thoughts? Memories? Or no?

Yes the human soul was created when God breathed life into it.

I don't know how much research you have done about Christianity but it has not been extensive to say the least.

And no i can't define soul. I can't even think a good definition for a car.
And, yes, yes, yes

SUM,

ok read Revelation

That's ok if you can't define a soul. I mean, if you believe in it but don't know what it is, it might be a good idea to dwell on that a bit, but based on your age identifier, you've got plenty of time.

If a soul contains our personality and memories, then why can our personality and memories be changed based on damage to our brain?

Can you point to where my "research" has not been extensive? :)

Had it been extensive you would not be asking the questions you are now. Or maybe you know and are just trying to find fault in my definitions. idk but this is off topic
I'm asking the questions to you, not to Christianity. I'm looking for your answers. I'm discussing this with you to work through definitions, see how you think, and offer my own views. That's what a discussion is about.

Various Christian thinkers have written a lot about the soul and the afterlife and all that. Various Christian denominations have plenty of doctrines about things. When I'm interested in what they have to say, I consult the library, not an internet forum. When I'm interested in what other people have to say, I consult them personally. Christianity contains 2 billion people and is 2000 years old, and so contains a lot of diverging opinions on the soul and the afterlife.

So many questions, I'll try to hit them all.

It may not be forever, but you know most of the time I would like to be worshiping God. That is the point of going to heaven after all, to get closer to God. Types of worship: similar to here singing, dancing, praying as a church.

The one true God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

How would you describe heaven?

Wouldn’t you eventually get tired of “singing, dancing, and praying”? Think about what your saying this is forever. Wouldn’t you run out of songs to sing or dances to dance or prayers to pray and why pray at all you’ve already got into heaven right?

As a Christian who believes in the afterlife, I wonder about this a lot...honestly, I think that there's going to be something radically different in our understanding of time once we pass over.

You still believe that your afterlife will be an eternity regardless of how we perceive time correct?

What do you think you’ll be doing for eternity?

In heaven? uh Idk uhhh videogames, tv, minigolf, laser tag, rock climbing, bowling, basketball, talking to God face to face....you name it.
You understand that unless you have an infinite list, you'll run out of things to do, right?

Well, unless cocaine is on that list.

Remember you have an eternity…

Don’t you think you would get bored with videogames that is you would become so good at them that they would no longer be challenging? Who would make these videogames of yours or do you show up there with them?

What sort of television programs will you watch and who will fix your T.V. when it breaks? Are there laborers in this place to do this job?

Who are playing laser tag with and who made the guns? Are there factories there? Do janitors, line workers, maintenance guys, safety guys, mangers…work in these factories. Do they have labor laws are they treated well?

Won’t you run out of rocks to climb?

Who will clean your bowling alleys and basketball courts?

What would say to your god?
