  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi. I absolutely adore photography... digital, film, whatever. The problem is that I have no decent equipment. I haven't managed to move beyond my point and shoot from 6 years ago. Grr. So I'm looking for something with manual control features, I'm leaning towards a film SLR simply because I'm a broke college student and $800-1200 for a digital SLR isn't going to work until I get a decent job, etc. So can any of you offer suggestions as to what I should get? Digital point and shoot? Film? I've been doing some research but it can get overwhelming. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It sounds like you're in the same place I was about three years ago!! I think an SLR is a good choice because it gives you the options of changing your lenses. There are a lot of good basic SLRs out there like the Canon Rebel.

Even though the initial outlay of a digital camera is steeper than film, you might want to try and make a shot for digital anyway. True, the film camera will be cheaper. But then you're going to have to constantly pay for film developing. And you have to pay for every shot, whether it works out the way you wanted it or not. A big plus about digital is that I'm not hesitant about playing around with different shutter speeds or apetures or other experimental stuff, because if I don't like the way it comes out I just delete the file. I'm only paying for the prints I really like. I think I've learned photography much faster by shooting digital.

Maybe you could find a digital SLR for less on ebay or something like that.
