In what ways are men and women the same?
In what ways are men and women different?
I think the traditional dating game has a big impact on men that it doesn’t have on women.
I think guys spend much of their formative years learning the skills of negotiation that women often don’t learn. Traditionally when a guy wants to get with a woman, he has to negotiate with her to get her number, a date, sex, or whatever; and he does this knowing there is a good chance he will get turned down. Back in my single days, I used to go to a club with at a dozen pieces of paper with my phone number written on it, and I wouldn’t leave the club unless I had at least 1 number from a girl or all of my numbers were given out. Yeah; I got turned down a lot but I never left a club without a number because when one girl said no, there was always another one, so I was okay if she said no.
I just saw it as “crackin on girls” but I was actually learning skills that helped me get ahead in life! The same audacity that allowed me to approach a complete stranger and say
“Hello pretty girl! Is this seat taken? Can I buy you a drink? I’m Kenny what’s your name? I don’t mean to brag but I’m kinda a big deal around here; yeah everybody knows me; when you hear people talkin’ about the big black guy; they talkin’ about ME!”
gave me the confidence to go to a job interview and say
I’ve got the skills to be a great asset to this company, but I’m gonna need at least $20 per hr in order to make this work.
I would say this knowing I will probably get turned down but I had the same attitude I had in the club; knowing there was another job just around the corner so I was okay with no.
Somebody without those skills would probably be hired at $18 per hr and wonder why I got a higher rate even though I am no more qualified than they were.
And it’s not just jobs, it’s buying cars, houses, anything that can requires negotiation. I’m not saying women don’t learn these skills, there are plenty of other ways people learn to negotiate, but I think this is something almost all men learn.
