  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Epistomology attempts to answer the question: How do you know what you know is true?

So it's basically the search for truth?

Attempts to answer the question. Well, how do you start answering that question?

I'm going to attempt to answer that question, tell me if I have it right.

How do you know what you know is true? Reason. Reason tells me that what I know is true, because reason is the foundation of knowledge.

Pick up a good book on the history of philosophy and read up on Rene Descares. In his book “Meditations Descartes tells of the day he spent alone by a stove in Germany during the tiem he was a soldier, and how, little by little he began processing the question of how do I know what I know?

In summary Descares said:

“Because our senses deceive us, I must suppose that nothing is as it appears. “How do I know I’m sitting here by the stove? I cannot be certain, I could be dreaming or hallucinating, a wicked demon might be tricking me. The only thing I cannot doubt is that I think something, even if it’s thinking I’m dreaming or being tricked, or thinking I don’t have a body.”

Ultimately Descares came up with “cogito ergo sum” or I think, therefore I am.

After this skip ahead to David Hume. Hume basically destroying all of Descares’ work by casting doubt upon cause and effect relationships.

Or more precisely, I doubt, therefore I think.
