The elders would be men who have shown their ability to understand and teach the Scriptures and their maturity in the faith. They are used to stand in for the pastor when needed and to help him by being a wise council to him. What they are not is co-pastors. The pastor does not answer to them he answers to Christ. Elders often become pastors of churches.
