Engorgement HELP

I dont know what to do. My milk came in and i cant get Trevor to latch on right and he is not eating enough and i am in pain, and he hasnt pooped or peed in , well, all day.

I have a dr. appt tomorrow but i am stressing today.

Do you have a pump? It may help to pump a little before you try to nurse him. Sometimes when you are engorged, that makes it hard for them to latch on. Also, I was having trouble with Ellie having a lazy suck and the lactation consultant told me to let her suck on my index finger for about 10 min. before I tried to nurse her to help her get the hang of it. I don't know if it will help w/ latching or not.

Good luck--I know it is hard to get the hang of. I had to stop before Ellie and I had a chance to get the hang of it.

Yes express or pump some. Or, get in a warm shower and they will start leaking which helps some get out. Sometimes the baby can't latch on when they are over full. Its really uncomfortable but it lasts only a couple days. The maybe may be peeing and you may not be able to tell. Those new disposables are hard to tell. And newborns don't always get into regular pooping routine right away.

Breastfed babies sometimes don't do a bowel motion every day, maybe every 2 - 3 days. Sometimes up to a week, although when they do that, it's usually a whopper.


I agree with what the other ladies have said re expressing. If you don't have a pump get in a warm shower, and express in there.

Also with those disposable nappies, it's very hard to tell sometimes if they have a wet one. (that's why I prefer cloth especially for the first weeks)

Congrats on the little one!

Skip the diaper for a time if you can, then you will definatly know! (waterproof pad ont he bed or floor, and easy wash clothes for you!

When you see the Dr ask how you can hand express a little if you don't have a pump or if it is too painful, letting the milk drip out can really help, and don't give up, you and your little one will get the hang of it, it aint that easy for something supposed to be natural instinct!

PUMP! but not too much! I did this with ds#1 and kept producing way too much milk (but had quite a stash in the freezer! )

Ds#2 is 3 weeks old and when my milk came in I was in PAIN and leaking and tired and did I mention the pain?? I would pump 2 times a day until I could stand to go 1 time then none! And alternate a hot shower in there. He also had a hard time latching on when I was engorged. I promise this only lasts a few days.

Something I did with DS #1 was freeze wet washcloths in reclosable bags and pad my bra...ahh sweet relief plus it will help cut back the milk production!

Congrats and good luck. Stick with it! It gets better and is easier then keeping up with formula!

The nurse at the hospital had a great idea that I used.

Wet the newborn diapers with hot water. They make great warm compresses...Waterproof and perfect size. Then when they cool, put them in the freezer...later you have cool compresses.

Worked like a charm!

I would say do everything you can to releave yourself from engorgement to provent plugged milk ducts. I would strongly encourage you to seek help from a Lactation Consultant. I had many problems BF my son in the beginning. Don't feel bad if you have to go multiple times. If you can't find one contact "La Leche League" near your home. They can help you find one.
