  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Need some help from the English people here.

The ladies in my Anglican Church host a traditional English Tea for the community every year as a fund raiser.

One of them asked me to ask you all what are the traditional English foods they should be serving.

The lady that asked for the help is actually from England, but has been living here in the USA for about 30 years.

So, does anyone have some good ideas?

Have you had the Tea yet?

Just thought I'd like to say that as a member of the university Tea Society; this thread impresses me.
However, may I say that Victoria sponge cake is marvellous, and if cucumber sandwiches are to be made, they are a very fine art and require much preparation...not to mention that they must be eaten pretty promptly.

Hmmm... this thread is making me feel quite hungry :)

If you are preparing an English Tea, I would definitely suggest that a traditional Cream Tea would go down rather nicely (that is scones and clotted cream)

And also... no coffee... it is called and English Tea for a reason :D

Down here they sell what they describe as a "Devonshire Cream Tea", but the cream isn't clotted, it's 'thickened' muck. You can sometimes buy something that claims to be clotted cream, but even that is a very poor imitation of the real thing.

hmmm... remind me never to have an English Tea in Australia :D
Compared with Devon (my previous abode before moving here) Australia is decidedly second rate on diary products in general. I would settle for one really good cheese, let alone the selection I used to get in Exeter. (Not to mention beer and pubs.)

The weather is better though.

Yep, England might not be so good for some things, but it's definitely better than some other countries for other things.

On up side, I've spent the weekend sitting outside on the veranda reading Images of the Church in the New Testament and enjoying the beautiful weather. I wouldn't be doing that in winter in Exeter. Come to think of it, you get precious few days this pleasant in Exeter in summer.

Been ridiculously hot in South Carolina all summer long. Only recently have we finally not cracked 90 degrees.

On the other hand, where most of my family lives in the Rochester, NY area, its been one of the most dismal summers in quite some time.

If I were up there, I'd want a hot cocoa. Here, I'll take a virgin pina colada (and don't spare the umbrella!).

Direct from the "worth every penny" department...the Afternoon Tea menu at the Ritz in San Francisco...finger sandwiches are good...particularly the bizarre English obsession with cucumbers. :) lol.
