Today (Sunday) I finally popped the question! Here's how it went...
First of all Katie and I are both our first relationship and we began dating our freshman year of college in the fall of 2002. Within months we were absolute best friends and have become closer ever since. We've had our fair share of deaths and other associated termoil over the years which has really changed us a lot - for the better. We've been able to grow even close through these difficult times, but still needed time before engagement.
Our favorite place is the town of Ellensburg, WA, where we went to college and met. A several weeks ago she decided we should take a quick day trip over there (From Seattle) before the weather over the mountain pass becomes too bad and decided we go up this Sunday (22nd). Now, you need to know that Katie is absolutely no fun at the "guess what?" game. Ever single time she gets it exactally right - no fun at all! What that means for my proposal is that it has to be HER idea... if I suddenly said, "hey, we should drive 2 hours over to Ellensburg for the day," she would know something was up. Also she is not a girly-girl and never looks at jewlery, so I cannot say, "hey, look at those rings," otherwise she will quickly become suspicious. So, I quickly took advantage of her interest in going over to E-burg, since that is where I wanted to propose to her.
Friday comes around and I go to a local jewler and pick out a "presentation" ring, which will be a sort of place holder until we can go in together to pick out an engagement ring... she has to have SOMETHING at least to wear, right?
So, now its Sunday and we drive the 3 hours over there (lots of snow!) and drive around, checking out how much the town and campus has changed and remembering the "good old times" and just having a blast. After we've seen everything in town (an hour, lol) we go up to the huge water-tower hill/park where you can overlook the entire valley, a place we used to frequent for our astronomy classes. We get up there and its quiet (freezing) and absolutely beautiful as the sun is out and bright, shining on the snow-covered mountains. I'm about to make my move to propose, when suddenly Katie notices a group of people. She takes a closer look and notices one man is dressed up - I kid you not - as a purple Telitubbie, bouncing all around! What the heck?!?! Of all the places in this town, and of all the crazy things to do, why does someone have to be dressed as a purple Teletubby at the very location, and very time I wanted to propose to my girlfriend of 7 years?!
Being the quirky couple that we are, it was sadly a very fitting situation for us as we had a great laugh over it... After they left and the bouncing Teletubby was gone, I made my move and asked for her hand in marriage, and gave her the ring. Needles to say was VERY excited and happy and instantly said yes.
So now, November is my favorite month of the year, except for the 26th, which is the date her dad passed away 2 years ago. Minor detail, I know, but what is one to do?
We QUICKLY made it back to the west side before the jewler closed and she was able to pick out an amazing engagement ring, which will be ready to pick up tomorrow.
Wohoo!!
