There is finite amount of resources on this planet for us to consume. The only real long-term solution to make this country and the world sustainable is to reduce consumption. So those Hummers and Escalades really do have to go. It affects everyone when one individual leaves such a destructive footprint on the world we all live on.
Reducing consumption will not solve the problem, only delay it. That seems to be common sense.

On the contrary, reducing consumption is the ONLY way to solve the problem. Anything else will only delay it. That's common sense.

You're the on who said "reduce consumption." Reduce consumption of what? I assumed consumption of what we're using now. If you mean something else, then say so.
Uh, reduce consumption of energy...I believe that is in fact the topic of this thread, after all...

Uhh, actually I think the subject is the White House being OK with high gas prices.
That's the OP's spin on it.

And certainly the relevant issue of energy consumption came up already, which is why I chose to address it.

Demand is down in the U.S. So that supply and demand talk is crap.
Oil is sold on the global market, so US demand is not the only demand (but it is still, by far, the primary consumer). But demand is only half the equation - as long as demand equals (or exceeds) supply, prices will stay high.

We're No. 1 (and No. 3)! Surprising Facts About the U.S. and Oil - DailyFinance

Given that total global production of oil is 85.5 MBD and total consumption is 85.6 MBD, the U.S. by itself consumes 22% of the world's oil supply.
The US has reserves of oil, but nowhere near as much as the Middle East. If we pump more, it's likely that OPEC will pump less, to maintain high prices.

The president could absolutely affect prices. All he needs to do is announce we will buy oil from Canada, drill in ANWR, stop exporting most of our own oil, while developing alternatives.
Who is this "we" who will stop exporting "our" own oil? Do you want the president to nationalize the oil companies or simply regulate who these private companies can sell oil to?

We already import oil from Canada (#1) and Mexico (#2).
The United States and Oil Imports - Facts and Figures

His current stance is only hurting the POOR, who can't afford $4 a gallon.....the very people he's supposed to CARE about. Or maybe not.
So you think that Obama's energy policy needs to be more socialist and less capitalist/free market?
