  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Embroidery is beautiful work!! Years ago, I taught a craft/quilt class...we took quilted fabric squares in an ecru color and cut them about 16" square. Then we took an embroidery pattern, like a basket of flowers, or candlewicking, and copied it on a xerox machine. Then we took it and placed it faced down on the fabric and pressed it with an dry iron...but we had to be careful because it easily scorched. After the pressing is done...the pattern is transfered onto the fabric, and you have your flowers or birds or whatever to embroider. We also did applique blocks squares and tole painting on some squares. Then we assembled all the squares together to make a quilt. Some women bought fabric, like the calicoes, to make sashes between each square and for borders as well. And it turned out to be the most beautiful embroidered quilt!

peaglej, do you have a photo of that quilt? I'd love to see it!

Hi LostnFound...
Sad to say, #1...there were no pictures, and I never thought about taking one and #2...as with most things...my house is pretty void of crafts...however, everyone else in my family has walls full of stuff, lol. I never finished a whole embroidered quilt for myself, but did a wallhanging for my Mom and helped the women in the class with theirs...so, no pictures...but it sure was pretty.

This was in the mid 1980's when I taught that class and the blocks were different, as I said...a couple different candlewicking blocks...an applique block, one was tole painted/stenciled and then the rest were embroidered. And the prettiest one, I thought, was of two partridges or doves and there was a heart between them. And the stitch was called a Russian knot or something like that...not a French knot, but a variation and it was beautiful a beautiful stitch. I would have to find a book of stitches to refresh my memory...

I had gone to the library at one point and found some books on crewel embroidery and they had some of the patterns we did in those books. I have a few of the patterns left over, but because my husband and I are not in our home state for the next few months, all my patterns are in storage...

I hope to do a whole embroidered quilt for me one day...lol

There is a design printed on fabric, and you use embroidery floss with all sorts of different kinds of stitches over it. Basically it's fancy needlework done on fabric. And there are lots and lots of different stitches.

When I first learned to do embroidery, I bought of one of those little Jiffy stitchery kits...it does a 5x7 picture...and it came with the stamped picture, the floss and needle...you just need to get your own hoop to hold your work. Their directions on each stitch were pretty easy to follow...and the project was not so big that you get overwhelmed...that might be a good place to start to learn your embroidery stitches...

I have been thinking of taking some of my plain blouses in the closet, and adding some embroidered flowers on them, that is on collars, pockets, etc., and making them all a little fancier. Plus, they will be more of a "one of a kind" thing. :pink:
