Matthew 3:
"11": I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with
fire:
Matthew 13:
"41": The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
"42": And shall cast them into a furnace of
fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 12:
"49": I am come to send
fire on the earth; and what will I if it be already kindled?
Acts 2:
"3": And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of
fire, and it sat upon each of them.
2Peter 3:
"12": Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on
fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

In the gospel of Thomas Jesus said, Jesus said, "I have cast
fire upon the world, and look, I'm guarding it until it blazes."
Jesus also said, Perhaps people think that I have come to casy peace upon the world. They do not know that I have come to cast conflicts upon the earth:
fire, sword, war.
For there will be five in a house: there'll be three against two and two against three, father against son and son against father, and they will stand alone.
Jesus said,"Whoever is near me is near the
fire, and whoever is far from me is far from the <FATHER'Skingdom."
My question is—who here is near the
fire? Who here embraces the flame (of enlightenment)? What Christian here is willing to go to hell if God told them to do it for their own redemption? Who here is willing to fall down a bottomless pit for their God—if he so asked or required of you?
If yes then how come you haven’t embraced the flame as of yet—to fall downwards-down the downward spiral-to find the Light of knowledge? Why do you think redemption will come from the repentance of sin? If your God so required you to commit a sin against him, to fall into the pit in the order of attaining the flame, would you do it?
; For the
flames of hell burn to purify the human soul!
What if God asked you to go dance with the serpent to steal Him (God) an apple? Would you do it? Would you risk your soul in the fire? Would you be able to sleep in the fire?
Would you be able to look at your reflection? That horrid reflection?
Would you see an angel or demon through the looking glass?
Who here is willing to take a leap of faith—to dance in the flames with the Serpent?

In the first season of the TV show "Beavis and Butthead" the less intelligent of the two retards was rather fond of screaming "FIRE. FIRE.” at inopportune moments.

Receiving reports that this might encourage impressionable children to set fire to their houses, the network made the creators of the show discontinue this amusing peccadillo of the Beavis character.

A word to the wise, christian friends?

I liked your post, 8472.

Simple: because we don't want to die. Don't know if you intended this, but this question, followed to its logical conclusion, leads to the impossibility of salvation by free will. Regeneration = illumination (among other goods), and regeneration is death of falsity/evil/unregenerate portions of the spirit. Fire=regeneration, and we have some small capability to participate, but it's fallen and meager. We hate truth (Jn 3:19), which doubtless led Simon & Garfunkel to sing, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest"

My two cents, anyhow.

Jesus said those who are close to the fire are close to me; and those who are far from the fire are far from the Kingdom. He also came to bless men with the holy ghost and fire. A flame is sparked when it is metaphorically internalized through and by the spirit; of which you must deny the self, sending the body into hellfire or the downward spiral, of which leads to enlightenment--into the realization that I am not flesh and bone, merely.
Enlightenment is like a flame that engulfs the mind and un-veils the blackness of the earth. Just like the rolling stones song: Paint it black.
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil...
If I am happy with the world then I have yet to be born in the spirit; for Christ said, Those who do not hate the world are not worthy of me; likewise, those who love mother and father more than me are not worthy of me. Those who have come to know the world, have passed through fire and water and death, and thereby have fallen into a corpse--of these, the world is not worthy. He who loves the world more than me cannot be my disciple. Those that drink from my mouth will come into my way; and I will become that person; and the things that were hidden shall be revealed to him.
So, take a leap of faith, in the name of Christ, and leap into the flames.

Is it possible that these verses would somehow correlate with the Roman Catholic view of purgatory?
No...Species has a penchant for taking scripture out of context and is a rather mystical fellow. Nothing that a solid class or two in Hermeneutics and Exegesis ( and a few years of study ) wouldn't straighten out. But then I would recommend the same for all of us.
