For those who don't know, ekphrastic poetry refers to poetry derived from other art. In this case, poetry derived from the works of Kathy Sosa and Gabrielle Wu Lee. A handful of students in the English Department at my school, Southeaster University, will be reading poetry at the local museum of art tomorrow evening. These are the poems I wrote for the event.
1) Rocky Rainbow Chase by Wu Lee
Depth Inspired by Rocky Rainbow Chase
The mountains stand tall
Firm and frozen against the boiling rocks below
Icy and proud
Betraying nothing, but that which has been heaped upon them.
Yet look deeper
See what lies beneath the cool embrace of the clouds and Snow.
A greater monument lies beneath the ice
Its silhouette barely visible
Beneath the weighty clouds
The sky plays
And the clouds dance around the cliffs
Above the peaks, and valleys.
And the mountain carries it all.

2) Clair de Lune/The Moonlight by Wu Lee
Moonlight Underwater Inspired by Clair Du Lune
Golden Clouds dance on the warm water here
Painting the frothy waves with royal moonlight illuminating the deep blues
The enchanting green
The cerulean
Orange lights the frosty sea foam
Full, cool, salty air fills my lungs
As the light fills the water
Falling deeper beneath the waves.
Beneath the tumultuous surface, the water lies still.
Infinite light pierces wispy, honey-soaked clouds
Before painting depth into the ocean.
Before the moonlights reaches down
Down
Down.

3) Chile Lillies by Kathy Sosa
Wrapt in White Inspired by Chile Liles
She sits
Quietly
But theres a fire
You can see it in her eyes
Those blue-black eyes
Clutching pretty lilies
She seems inviting to guardians
But oh! Fear that fire!
The burning of a flower consumed leaves much deeper scars
Than that of a hot pepper

4) Arbol Metallica on My Mind by Kathy Sosa
Tides and Time Inspired by Abrol Metallica on My Mind
Red stained tears mark my cheeks
Knuckles slick with passion gently grip beauty
The sun!
The moon!
Rise and set on the arcs of our faith
Of our passion
Our love
Bright
And red
And passionate as heaven and hell
We cradle this passionate beauty into dawn.
The formatting didn't transfer, but trust me: it was awesome.
