• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I have been on it and didn't have any problems while I was on it. I took it for post-partum depression/anxiety. It did take a few weeks to feel the effects of it. When I went off it - it was difficult. You can't quit cold-turkey. You have to wean off of it over a relatively short period of time but is possible.

I took Zoloft before Effexor and I definetly like the Effexor better.

Good lucK!

From what I am reading everbodies experience seems to echo what doctors and pharmacists know about antidepressants.

Efexor (Venlafaxine) is a serotonin and noreadrenalin reuptake inhibitor used for major depression, generalised anxiety and social phobia. Common side effects are things like nausea, vomitint, fatigue, dizziness, headache, anorexia, orthostatic hypotension.

Like any medicine there are risks and benefits. Experience shows that most people will have to try at least one antidepressant before they find the right one for them. Unfortunatley at the moment we don't have a way of determining which drug will respond in which person. This also, unfortunately means we have to resort to trial and error until we find the right one.

Until we usher in the era of pharmacogenetics this is the only way we have to find out which drug is right for which person. I guess the key thing is that if you don't feel any benefit don't be afraid to tell the doctor - it simply means that you haven't responded to it, not that it hasn't worked - and they will try to find the right one for you.

I took Effexor for about 3 years and it really helped even out my mood. I came off it quite easily under doctors guidance. The dosage was gradually reduced and as I felt better I just forgot to take it. I have been off it about 21 months now and am doing really well. I don't remember any significant side effects.

Blessings

That may be hyperbole, but it's no picnic. Check out the following website for the good, the bad, & the ugly of Effexor.

I took it for over a year (375mg/day) and thank God I didn't kill somebody. It turned me into a wild man.

I've been on effexor for a couple of years after trying numerous other antedepressants which just did not work or had troublesome side effects. I have no noticeable side effects except when i forget to take the tablets and then i get terrible withdrawal symptoms.

I guess we're all different.
