The food laws are nothing to do with hygeine - they are for a particular religious reason. They existed to seperate the Jews from the Gentiles. They were like a badge - this person is a Jew - he is circumcised, he does not eat non-Kosher.

But under the New Covenant, there is no Jew or Gentile. There is no cause for any mark of seperation, because Christ has broken these barriers down.

The Orthodox view as expressed above should be very telling. The Orthodox have a basic principle that if a teaching is new, it is probably wrong.

The fact that the Orthodox teaching is that we are not subject to the food laws demonstrates that it is the traditional view - i.e. it derives from the practices and teaching of the early church, derived from the apostles. Subjecting Christians to the food laws is thus a new teaching - contrary to the received tradition.

I concur with this approach. This is a new teaching. There is no new circumstance that should require us to reconsider the traditional position, and therefore I see no reason for change. Under Grace, there are no "clean" and "unclean" foods.

I have read in the Bible that eating pork and shellfish is prohibited by God Himself. From God's own mouth he commands this. So why do so many Christians that I have known throughout my life so blatantly ignore God's command? I was not even aware of this before I became a Christian, but now that I know, I have gievn up pork and shellfish and have asked God to forgive me for my ignorance.

I ask this question to my fellow Christians: are you aware of this law and if so then why to you ignore it? I'd really like to know, because it upset me greatly to know that so many of brothers and sister defy God's law.

Jesus said that we have to eat his flesh in the Gospel and that the sin doesn't depend on what we eat; therefore I think the flesh of the pork indicates what it's not Word of God.

Symes you are wrong about this, completely wrong. Jesus Christ gave us the New Covenant at the Last Supper.

Luke 22:20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

If the new covenant was in place before his time he would not have called it a new covenant as it would not have been new. This is not hard to understand. You shouldn't have gone there with the covenants, it only further proves our points about the Law as well:

Hebrews 8: 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.
8 For finding fault with them, He says,
"BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD,
WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT

Do you see that the old covenant is obsolete? The laws written on our hearts are nothing more than the two commandments Christ gave. We are not under food laws, sabbath laws, sacrificial laws, et al. We are under a new covenant that was prophesied during the time that the Law was in effect and then given to us by Christ. It was not present before that.

Do we have to do this every day Symes? It had two meanings. If it had not had anything to do with food then Peter would not have been rebuked when he stated that he had never eaten any common or unclean thing. It did have the meaning you say it had, it just also had the obvious meaning. The vision affirms Christ's words that nothing that goes into a man's mouth can defile him, and the meaning is proven again in 1 Tim where we are shown the every creature God created is good and nothing is to be refused if accepted with thanksgiving and prayer as through prayer God sanctifies our food. This goes back to the diet restrictions prior to the law that were given to Noah, which included every living thing.

things to the disciples on Earth. Some were to
mininster to the uncircumcised (gentiles, ie, you
and I) and to the Jews. Paul wrote about the
special status of the Jews in the NT.

If Jesus was God's Word made manifest on
Earth, what was His mission? Was it to spread
God's Word and glory for people to follow and
live by; or was there some other purpose?

Would replacing the Star of David in the Temples
with Crosses convince you that they were
glorifying God? What of the Churches with
Crosses who do *not* glorify God?

If God's Word is Law what is the litmus test
to determine if someone is "rejecting God"?
Is it simply saying "Jesus is Lord"? I thought
there was more to it than this.

Study the new testament more and don't overthink. You will be fine.

I actually have eaten and enjoy HAGGIS. I am looking forward to learning to make my own here at home. Haggis is quite enjoyable as well as tripitas burritos with nopales, menudo, barbacoa, and even tongue occassionally.

Yes you are correct that Jesus is for leading us out of sin and if you feel that you are giving God the finger you most definitly stop what you believe is offensive.

This is diricted towards people who think that something is still unlawful and bad for you.

I just wanted to point out that not only pork and shellfish are dangerous to eat raw- it's a risky business with most raw meats.

As to the OP, my point of view has been summed up by the majority of posters here. I love pork-it's hard to say no to a rack of ribs in a sticky barbeque sauce

If you want to follow the OT food laws, fair play to you. However, DON'T criticise others for not doing so. That's just not a dead-on thing to do.
