  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My kids are really too young to understand all that but I still do the Easter bunny, santa, etc. However, times like Easter and Christmas are also a very spiritual time for me. For example, my children will know that Christmas is about giving and about Jesus's birthday. Although my kids are 2 years old and 6 months old, I've already started the tradition that my mother did with all of her kids, I make Jesus a birthday cake and we sing Happy Birthday to him. I believe in children being children and allowing them some fantasy b/c as they get older - it's not as magical for them when they know that the Easter Bunny etc. does not exist but at least they know the meaning behind the holidays and so therefore, it will still be special to them. So, I let them have their fantasy but will also let them know the real meaning behind each holiday. Just me though.............

I think children can distinguish between fact and faction without too much difficulty, mine could. Obvously it is up to each individual parent how they bring their kids up, but childhood should be a magical time for children and I don't think a bit of fantasy does any harm. My eldest grandson 2yrs is nearly old enough to share in the world of magical make believe and I am determined to make it special for him.

I think you are totally wrong here. Kids can not distinguish between fact and fiction when they are 2-7 years old. If I tell my 5 year old something, she will believe it. She has faith in me to be true and honest to her. And I love that. I will not ruin that for any of my kids.

I am not saying that kids should not pretend. They should and so should us adults, but there is a fine line between pretend and actually believing Santa come down the chimney. Right?

My kids and I shut the lights off at night and grab flash lights and go through the house pretending we are finding clues to a mystery. We also pretend we are in an airplane flying through jungles and we grab our cameras and take pictures of the cool animals. That is pretend and the kids know that. That is healthy in my opinion.

I won't judge anyone if they choose to teach their kids there is a Santa and such. I am just saying, "Pray about it. What does God want you to do?" This is hard because we want our kids to grow up like the other kids on the block. We don't like to be different. To me, we as Christians should stand out like a sore thumb and there are so many folks who won't like it. And we are told that in the Bible. Just something to think about. :)
