My screen name says it all. Anyone else a fan? Dune doesn't get ANY love in my Orthodox universe nor my former Catholic one. Anybody out there able to show some love for Frank Herbert and this series? :)

I really enjoyed the Dune series when I read them as a teen.

Pretty mind-expanding.

Me too!
Isn't it the "Spice" and "Water of Life" that are the things that expand the mind?:D

In Orthodox or Catholic forums, everyone is a hater with Dune thinking Dune is a mockery of religion and prophecy, chiding God, etc. I just don't feel they understood the series. It was nothing of the sort, Whether Herbert was a believer or not, the series was about ecology, court intrigue, exploring the ideas of messiahship (more in an Islamic vein than a Christian one, as others here pointed out), and how people fall victim to their own legend, etc.

Frank Herbert was a Catholic turned Buddhist.

Though I'm certain this wasn't intentional, I think Dune speaks well about religion and where Christianity is heading culturally-speaking. The novel mentions religions which are combinations of preexisting ones, i.e. Zensunni, Mahayana Christianity, etc. It's very prophetic of what's going on now with Christians starting to bend to the whims of people and becoming diluted and, eventually, far-removed from what Christianity truly is.

Personally, I'm glad that it criticizes religion. It's justified. True Christianity isn't religion, it's beyond religion.

All that aside, I love Dune. I love it. The novel and the '84 movie. Don't like the sequels, though.

EDIT: Boss name, by the way, Gurneyhalleck1.

I adore Frank Herbert's works. Dune was and is, in my mind, a masterpiece.
