  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Talked to a dumpster diver, he was doing that because of drugs.

Actually, come to think of it, a former roommate of mine did a little bit of that to get furniture and various things. He collected a lot of junk - he had a full storage locker, and for a long time, he filled up the basement with crap that he was going to resell in a garage sale. When he finally had that sale, I was glad, and told him "never again."

Greetings!

For those of you who have had or know people who have dumpster diving experience, please share.

I watched people do it when I moved out of my last apartment because of how much I had to throw away. They are like vulchers. Call me weird, but I don't find treasure in someone else's trash.

'Tis amazing what people would throw out. The only thing I used to pick from the trash were huge cardboard boxes. This was when I was under 10 and still living in the city. I LOVED playing with huge boxes! They were my 'mansions'. :p

My older bro, though, would come home with a lot of interesting things.... >.> ... ^_^

Free stuff? Yes, please! A few years ago, I found a perfectly good dresser sitting on the curb a block uphill from home one night and somehow, by the grace of God, got it home and upstairs without the aid of hand trucks, belts, etc. I still have the dresser, and a couple of the drawers are no longer 'perfectly good,' but it's still an awesome piece of furniture.
You'd be surprised how many people here furnish their apartments with street furniture.

I saw people do it all the time during college. One girl brought a mattress in from the street, though. Ick. Can you say bed bugs? :p

My current roommate and I almost took a risk on a TV with a "free" sign sitting on the curb across the street once, but before we could decide if it was worth it it started pouring rain, so we figured if it wasn't busted before that probably did it. ;)

It's amazing what people throw out. At college, a few of us go dumpster diving once most people have moved out and the things you find-money, giftcards, tvs, couches-its insane. Especially at the bigger universities. The best find-one of my friends found a fairly new macbook in excellent working condition! Her laptop had just died too so it was an answer to a prayer. Still, who throw out a working macbook??

I had a cousin who, along with his roommates used to get food via dumpster diving at local supermarkets and such. He only did this for a year or two during college, as far as I know; now he's quite doing so. Let's just say that whenever they invited me over for dinner, I said: "No, thanks."

Obviously that's quite different from picking up used furniture that's sitting on the curb. There's nothing wrong with the latter as far as I can see.

Seriously, check big university dumpsters. I'm going to JMU in the fall, and from what I've been told finding laptops and perfectly good electronics is very common.
