  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Got my Learner's at 16

BUT...

due to a bunch of factors [dad's lack of patience and his rather foul tongue [cursing and making threats whilst either in a bad mood or drinking a beer during practice], a few friends being insincere, and time constraints, etc... ] I didn't get mine until just 2 years ago [when I was 22].

Oh... and since we're on the subject of DL's... I have to renew my license from CA to HI and have to take the written test all over again.... uggghhhh you know how long that's been since I even looked up road rules?! lol

The written tests have gotten a lot tougher recently.

Back when I first took mine the question was.

"How many seconds should you stay behind a vehicle in front of you"

Now its like "How many feet should you stay behind a vehicle at 60 mph."

What?? How am I suppose to tell how many feet I'm behind him, attach some weird tape measure mecahnism to the front of my car??

Oh and I remember a some ridiculous questions that where something like this.

"How much space does it take a semi weighing 80,000 pounds to come to a safe and complete stop from 75 mph."

Umm a really freaking long way??

They would have multiple choice, and it isn't about how hard it is to pass because you can find all the answers in the state driver's manual they give you to study from.

But what the heck good does knowing the exact amount of feet it takes a 80,000 semi going 75 mph to stop?

It is useful to know its a long way and you shouldn't slam on your brakes in front of a semi if you want to live. But come on. . .

Yea but there is a cost to handing out drivers licences like bubble gum in the USA, you get alot of idiot drivers and a very large number of auto accident fatalities and even greater number of property damage accidents. Driving in the USA is very stressful (at least in bigger towns and cities) because there is no expectation that the other guy actually knows how to drive because the requirements for a licence are next to nothing. I would not be opposed to making a drivers licence as onerous to get as a pilots licence as long as you made the requirements retroactive.

Ok, here's someone who's jealous at americans - I'd so have gotten my license when I was 16 if it were legal here.. o_O Now I'm still in driving school and will get it in perhaps two months.. Bleh.

Well its not like drivers in other nations are any better.

I don't think it has anything at all to do with if people know how to drive. I think its more of the problem of them not respecting the responsibilty of driving.

The rules are loose the relativly low for moving violations. It takes a lot to take away someone's license. So if you have people who are in a hurry they feel no reason as to why they shouldn't run that red light. Plus driving is so common that people often lapse and forget to consider all the safety considerations involved in driving.

Here is a site that I found on the most common causes of car accidents.

The 6 Most Common Causes of Automobile Crashes

My guess if you where to sit those people down and tell them they where taking a test on driving they would all become great drivers.

But thats because they are taking a test and purposefully concerning themselves with doing things the correct way. In actual life the only time people concern themselves with doing things the right way is when there happens to be a cop nearby.

The problem isn't if they know HOW to drive. The problem is if they choose to put it into practice.

The hardest thing when getting my drivers licence was not touching the curb while parallel parking on the driving exam. If I touched the curb it would be an automatic fail.
During practice I was having a lot of trouble. So during the exam I backed up as slow as I could until the person grading me just told me to stop.
I ended up passing the test and missed a point for not looking both ways 2 times before entering a street, and a point for almost touching the curb during parallel parking.
I think that was nice of the driver's instructor telling me to stop so I could pass the test. :D

Now I do parallel parking all the time at school. It's not so hard anymore. Though I still prefer to do parallel parking driving forwards rather than backwards, which is how it was on the test.
