Drinking to excess (getting drunk), certainly, but the only situation I can think of where simply drinking alcohol could be considered wrong, is where it might cause a weaker brother to stumble. Trying to build a general case against drinking alcohol is going to run into problems with Jesus first public miracle, turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana.

There is also the problem of St Paul's direction to St Timothy to drink wine as medicine.

1 Corinthians 6:12 - All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 10:23 - All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

It isn't necessarily wrong. Drinking in moderation is an indulgence, just like television or ice cream, or even the internet. As long as all of these things are kept in perspective, and other important areas of your life are not caused to suffer on their account, there is really nothing wrong with them.

Personally, I think there are better things that I would rather spend my time and money on, but thats my personal preference. - choose your poison, be it candy of fast-food, just make sure that you don't become a slave to your pleasures.

The only case I would make is causing a brother to stumble, so if you drink Alcohol in front of say and ex alcoholic and you didnt know especially if he was a new christian could cause him to stumble, in saying this I personally am against alcohol and I use the beleif that it has done much more bad to society than good so I leave it well alone, this of course is only MY opinion

The Bible speaks of alcohol in a positive sense (Deu. 14:26), and in a negative sense (Pro. 20:1).

(Eph 5:18) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

It didn't say, "Don't drink wine." It said don't get drunk. Moderation is the key.

But for some people, such as myself, we can't drink any. I'm an alcoholic with two years of sobriety as of June 3rd of this year. One drop, and it's all over for me.

Proverbs 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

Most everything available today would have been considered strong drink bible times. Most people mixed wine with water. in fact there have been ancient writings found of Pharisees arguing over how much water should be added! Paul's admonishment to Timothy was probably due to his being susceptible to the parasites often in water of that time. the alcohol in wine was used to kill them.

Considering how much suffering has been caused in our society by alcohol, the command to love our neighbor as ourselves should guide us to leave it alone. No one ever plans to become an, alcoholic and I surely don't want to play a roll in someone becoming one! Now if some one can show something of suficiant benifit to drinking, that would certinly apply. and by the way, most of the press about those studies about heart atacks seem to leave out mention of other undesireable efects of daily consumption. It's often in the study, but it doesn't make the sound bite. I heard a news report once that adressed the misconception that the Italian practice of drinking wine with every meal reduced alcoholism. They mentioned that Itally has a very high rate of alcoholism.

The bad most certinly outweighs the good.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
