The Lord Jesus Christ drank wine. SO much so that the religous pharisees accused him of being a drunkard.

Matthew 11:19 NIV
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." ' But wisdom is proved right by her actions."

Watch out for the yeast of the pharisee today;)

Dunno if the joke would make sense in Hebrew ^_^

BTW, the verse being referred to is Proverbs 20:1: Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Not a mockery, but a mocker. I think anybody who's ever seen a drunk person can recognize that.

Yet we're told in

Proverbs 31:6-7

"Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to him whose life is bitter.

Let him drink and forget his poverty
And remember his trouble no more."

Is drinking to forget one's-troubles , a good thing?

Hello to you and good evening.. I just want to say I can understand why you would find this confusing. In the old testament alot of things were done differently. Men would be married to goodness knows how many wives. God would come thru and wipe out an army of people. There are so many stories that we see in the Old Testament that makes us go:confused: There is even a place in proverbs that says Strong drink makes a man desire strange women^_^
When Jesus came, alot of things were changed. He said do not be drunk with wine. Now alot of people will argue with this because He turned the water in to wine at the wedding remember. Jesus did alot of things and you didn't have to go wow, where did that come from.. All I know is that if I drink to get drunk, I allow my body to not be itself. If I am not myself, then who is in control, God or satan? These are just my views, meaning, I am human and make plenty of mistakes.
God Bless You and Have a Wonderful Evening:)

Proberbs 20:1 also says "Wine makes you mean, beer makes you quarrelsome."

The best way to understand the book of Proverbs is to not think of it as a series of Biblical commands or absolutes, but a collection of truisms that need to be understood in context.

Well, look at it this way. Back in Jesus' day, wine was made by a fat guy stepping on grapes. (Yummy, huh?) Anyway, drinking wink would be bad if one didn't abuse it.
Actually, wine is very good for the body if taken in moderation. The problem is that people don't know to use alcohol in moderation.

Bottom line, I would just stay away from it. Better not to be tempted than to fall, right?

I don't think that's saying to get them drunk, though. There's no prohibition on drinking in the Bible, though there are many admonitions about drunkenness.

Also, this is one of the few bits in Proverbs that has a context.
Proverbs 31:1-9 said:
The sayings of King Lemuel—an oracle [a] his mother taught him: 2 "O my son, O son of my womb,
O son of my vows,
3 do not spend your strength on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.
4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel—
not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink and forget what the law decrees,
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Give beer to those who are perishing,
wine to those who are in anguish;
7 let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy."
King Lemuel (not random non-leaders) is told to help the oppressed, in the short term by assuaging their misery, and in the longer term by defending their rights and being a fair judge.

A lot of people do. Not all who drink get drunk. Every adult in my family drinks. Uncles, aunts, grandparents. Noone uses it in excess though.
I guess culture, upbringing and belief has a lot to do with it.

well...
the way i see it is that jesus turned water into wine(see john chapt2). If the bible says it was wine then i am going to believe it was fermented coz if it wasn't fermented then the bible would say jesus turned water into cordial, or something like that.
the bible also says that as christains we are supposed to submit to authority (see titus chapt3:1), hence if the law of your country says "consumption of alcohol if illegal if you are under 18" then if you are under age. drinking alcohol is wrong.
Other wise i dont see why christains cant drink alcohol, just as long as your dont get drunk. the bible says "its stupid to get drunk" (proverbs 20:1).
so i guess its just better to not drink at all.

it'll save you alot of money.:p

Amen to you all! But I have an interesting question.

If your capacity is 6 drinks and you have 1, are you 1/6 drunk? This is what some will have you believe, but from what I can see in the Bible
drinking in moderation isn't a problem.
