A fascinating talk on the place of icons in the Syriac tradition by Dr. Michael Wingert of Fuller Theological Seminary. The good doctor goes into several points that I have long wondered about the concerning the Syrians (and often the Armenians), such as their seeming preference for illustrated manuscripts over more 'standard' forms of iconography; some of the specific motifs found in Syriac icons and not in others', etc.
