There will also be some sort of lag. Chinese products at the port of Long Beach or Los Angeles then have to get by truck or rail to Topeka, and then by smaller trucks to individual brick and mortar stores. Some of that stuff is still on the road, but the flow got switched off at the port. And now the ships aren't even leaving China, or are leaving with less. According to Herrera and port officials, there will be more than 30 “blank sailings” in May at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, which occur when cargo ships cancel planned trips. That will mean 400,000 fewer containers will be shipped through the ports, officials said.
