I always said I didn't want *more* people watching me labor, but I think it might be easier to fend off the interventions and things I don't want if I have someone else do it for me. Anyone had a doula before? Tell me allll about it.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Check out DONA (Doulas of North America) www.dona.org I am also a doula, and I've had mom after mom thank me profusely for being there...
Statistics show that just having a woman who's given birth In your room while you're in labor will reduce your need for interventions! Isn't that amazing?!
Your doula can be the objective third party when the medical staff is telling you something and you're confused or unsure. You can usually find a doula who has at least Some experience with massage (even just basics, like the lower back) which also helps you relax and labor easier.
I've had 8 natural labors, and I did the best when I had someone there for ME (besides DH. He's too emotionally attached to what's going on to be any Real help.

If you're concerned that someone is going to "see" you in labor, then you can request that your doula spend her time nearer your head/lower back or that you're covered during labor (which you usually are~ by a sheet~ unless the doctor/nurse is checking your dilation).
To tell you the truth though, in a non-medicated labor, once you're in transition, they could wheel you through the mall stark naked and you wouldn't care at all. lol

No, I know I won't be concerned about nakedness. I pretty much lost all modesty during my last labor too, could have cared less....

How does one go about becoming a doula? Don't know how DH would feel about it, but I think I could do it.

Having a doula was great.
I have a friend who's a certified one, and another who me and my
cirlce of friends consider a doula because she's had so much experience acting as one for all of us!
It is priceless to have someone there, for your hubby, for you, for baby.
I had my first with just me and hubby, and that didn't go as I had wished at all, and the docs and nurses didn't communicate anything with us at all, they just gave orders.
My friend/doula has been with me for the last 3 births, and she has been invaluable, protecting me and baby, she knows a lot of the midwives and gets along well with them, AND she has pushed me over many humps and directed me when I needed it during labor, when things didn't go as planned and I was moved from the birthing center, skillfully meneuvering through my weary crazy mentality to get me to do what I needed for the best of baby and me!
I'm a huge fan of doulas.
Highly recommend.
I think some do it for free.....not sure though.
(I had a couple of aquaintances who were certified that did it as a ministry....)

Somehow having someone there to support and help, who is there just for you, and will do whatever you need and support your needs and goals, makes it easier to relax and easier to work with the labor instead of against it.
