  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Does anyone ever doubt their writing at some point?

Like, someone says something and all of a sudden, you wonder if everyone around you has been lying to you about your abilities and you've deluded yourself? Or you read a published book and it's like a billion times better and everything you write just doesn't seem all that great?

I doubt pretty much all the time. I'll look and be happy with it, then I'll rethink and wonder how I ever thought it was good enough. Doubt is tricky for writers, and it's best just to put it out of your mind and do the best you can regardless of any doubt or comments, etc.

yeah, i try to but it becomes difficult at times. i usually have a friend look my stuff over and they say it's fine but i never believe them. i wish doubt didn't exist.

Heck, yeah! I'm always doubting my writing. I still have no idea how good mine is.

right? i wish there was a website or something that could be critical enough to help improve with everything or something that'd make the doubts all go away.

You can get critiqued by anyone as long as you are willing to ask them to do it, if that's what worries you.

As far as doubt goes, well we are all humans and until Jesus doesn't come back for us, that doubt will linger among us. I guess a way we can deal with it is to just stop caring about whether the art we create is perfect or not, and just focus on creating more, because each time we create something we push the envelope and increase our own skills. If you are worried about perfection here is what one beautiful person from Youtube said:

"Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes better. Perfection is an illusion created by people who always want to be disappointed in themselves."

I can't post any links right now because I still haven't reached the requirements for it, but I've found his video again, his name is Zach Anner and the video in which he talks about it is called
"To The Limit - Workout Wednesday #5"

So keep on creating and practising! :ok:

Every single day of my life! However, let's look at the bright side. This doubt and fear is ultimately what drives you to become better. You care deeply about the quality of your writing. Understand that every author has these feelings at one time or another. Try to embrace the fact that you have these doubts and know that it is giving you an edge that you need.

Here is one of my favorite quotes of all time (adapted to fit your situation):

"Making your mark in this world is hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment. And it comes with plenty of criticism along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this criticism, because you won't. It's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction; or whether you choose to learn from it; Whether you choose to persevere."

Often. It's just part of it. I think the best advice I can give is to acknowledge the doubt, then ignore it and write.

When I was in college, a decade or so ago, I had a deadline to turn in some writing for a writing course. I felt like nothing was coming together. I hated everything I was turning out and I couldn't seem to conclude anything. So when deadline day showed up and I had to turn in something, all I had was a batch of unfinished fragments. All I could do was turn those in and prepare myself for criticism. And you not what? I'm not exaggerating at all. My professor loved what I had written and suggested I write more and make it a book for publication. You just never know. All you can do is write and pray. And not in that order.

Blessings to you,
a
