It's actually called a DoS rather than a DOS attack. :D

Anyway, thanks for dealing with it, everyone. I never understood why anyone would do something like that - as it doesn't really mean anything, and certainly does not add anything positive in life (theirs).

 ^_^

Depending on how severe the attack is.. it most certainly can mean something. It could cause the forum to be shut down. In the one that happened a few years ago.. it was a deliberate attempt to shut that specific forum down. And if I'm remembering correctly.. it worked. Certainly caused enough havoc.. there was talk about it even on other forums. And I think it was an ez board forum at the time.. under the old ezboard system. Or maybe the forums doing the attacking were a group from ezboard. I don't quite remember.. but it was a vicious mean spirited thing to do.

Well of course it can shut a site down. That isn't what I meant. There is nothing positive in this type of thing was my point. It ends up not "meaning anything or adding anything positive" to that person(s) life. It's a complete waste.

I was wondering why Disk Operating System attacks were happening only realised as I was reading that it was Denial of Service. Can you tell I've mucked about with computers for a wee while?
Me too! :p

Thanks Erwin and Lee and everyone. :)

It's pretty easy to set up an otherwise innocent server to act as a springboard for launching DoS attacks. It's not that much harder to code it to be self-propogating so that it attacks through different IP blocks or domains.

Why anyone would want to, though, is beyond me. It's a pretty lowbrow, ham-fisted way to trash a messageboard, and it is mostly pointless--once the attacks end, there is no lasting harm done to the board.

There are more sophisticated and elegant methods which are actually effective in the long-term. Since they are not using them, I submit that the attackers are novices, inexperienced wannabes, and they shouldn't be too terribly hard to stop.
