Jesus said "Don't lie, and don't do what you hate." What is the exact meaning of this? I'm not talking about the "don't lie" part. I'm talking about the "don't do what you hate" part. What does that mean?
This verse is from the Gospel of Thomas.

Here it is with the surrounding verses:

6. His disciples asked him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How should we pray? Should we give to charity? What diet should we observe?"

Jesus said, "Don't lie, and don't do what you hate, because all things are disclosed before heaven. After all, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and there is nothing covered up that will remain undisclosed."

From what I can tell, Jesus is basically advising against engaging in ritualistic behaviors that one doesn't have any appreciation for, because then one is just going through the motions, and there will come a time where one's true feelings about such activities will be brought to light.

Well I hate working for someone else. I want to work for myself. Is he saying that I shouldn't do it, because I hate it? That I should really be self employed which I don't hate?
The passage seems to be dealing with engaging in religious rituals, given the nature of the question the disciples were asking him.

Ok, I'lll give two answers.....Religious and Spiritual.

Religious:
This book is not Inspired by God.....It isnt God breathe.....you shouldnt even be reading it........Get out of here with this mess. Amen

Spiritual:
God knows the Heart. And only sees the heart. You can follow all the forms of religion and even give your heart to be burned.....but if you have not charity, it profits you nothing. So do what you love to do, not what you feel you are supposed to do, or what others are doing, or what you have to do. If you do anything for the latter reasons, it profits you nothing and you will be exposed. So follow your heart, because that is what God follows. #heart

The gospel of Thomas is not part of the canon of the New Testament so it cannot be viewed as inspired Scripture. But it could contain good stuff just like any other Christian literature that we read.

The link I can see is what Paul talked about in Romans, where he valued the Law of God in his heart, but did things he didn't want to do, and the things he wanted to do he didn't. He had a real struggle about that. I can see that Paul did things that he hated, and saw that in himself there was no good thing. He cries out, "What shall deliver me from this body of death?" He then accepts the finished work of Christ as the answer for him, so he takes hold of Christ, accepts His righteousness, and this brings him peace.

No.
If you want to be self employed, are you looking into how to make that a possibility?
I've worked for employers and I've been self employed...both have their pluses/minuses...not sure if I liked one more than the other but I enjoyed the patients I had because I could pick and choose whom I wanted.
I previously worked as a caregiver...recently retired.

The gospel of Thomas is not part of the canon of the New Testament so it cannot be viewed as inspired Scripture. But it could contain good stuff just like any other Christian literature that we read.

Canon is just a tradition formed long after the books were written. If one cannot discern scripture as scripture today, by it's very nature, then why accept what some other guys said long ago. Having said that, I believe that scripture is discernible as scripture by anyone who chooses to actually study them for that purpose. That's another discussion.

A long time ago I said "I don't make the the claim that GOT should be scripture. But it would be similar to any modern book about the Bible. I believe that you will find the GOT and sensus plenior to be thoroughly orthodox in its doctrine of Christ."

GOT appears to be notes someone took while being taught how to read the sensus plenior of scripture. The term 'sensus plenior' is being used to refer to the hidden meaning of scripture which God intended, but of which the human author was not aware.

You will find many opinions about sensus plenior along a spectrum from a denial of it's existence to an admonishment that if it exists, we are not permitted to read it because we are not apostles.

With the view that the genre of Biblical revelation is that of sublime childish riddle (riddle inside of literal in a double-entendre), the sensus plenior would be expected to teach doctrine in agreement with New Testament doctrine. The revelation of Christ provides the clues to solve the "mystery which has been hidden from the beginning".

I think Paul was addressing Universal Sin (Original sin). When we act instinctively, we choose good and evil for ourselves. We usurp God's position as the definer of what is good. By our flesh we pretend to be equal with God. But because it is instinctive, we have no control over it. This is the sinfulness of sin. We would not be commanded to have control over something that is uncontrollable.

I think Thomas was addressing hypocrisy. This is something that we can be commanded to avoid.

The Kingdom of heaven is teaching, so the great sins against the kingdom are lying and hypocrisy. "Jesus said, "Do not tell lies, and do not do what you hate,"

In terms of employment, God prepares us for the good works He wants us to do.
So we dont work for others or even ourselves we really work for the Lord.

I am not familiar with the gospel of Thomas its not in my bible. I dont recall Jesus saying those words in the Bible but I do recall Him saying he hates the deeds of the Nicolatians. I wanted to know what the Nicolatians did that was so bad apparently they were into porn and wife swapping.revelation 2:6

Another thing Jesus said was that we were to Love God and hate our own parents (in comparison) and even our own life Luke 14:26. He also advises that we were not to serve two masters because we would love one and hate the other. In this instance he was referring to God and mammon (money) matthew 6:24

So the question for you OP is who are you going to love, God, or making $$?
